Titles & Thrones : Vol. I
Jarls & Konungrs

A Norse Title Flavor Mod for Crusader Kings III

Released this mod in honor of my dad's death - who passed away a few years ago today [11/17/2025].

My dad loved Vikings and Bernard Cornwell books, I grew up enjoying them with him. In honor of him I release this.

What This Mod Does
Brings Norse rulership to life with fully flavorized title names across the entire rank spectrum from a Norse Baron's son to a Hegemon:

HöfðingiYfirkonungr
• Rulers (M/F), Heirs (M/F), and Queen Mothers
• Titles with appropriate levels of priority!
• No Norse heirs who are landed (even as barons) being shown as Princes.
• Regional & rank-based variations (Independent vs Vassal based titles for the same tier)
• Clear social hierarchy at a glance

New Titles for Norse Rulers

Historical-Cultural Foundation
Where did you get your titles? From these four places/methodologies
1 — Historical Reality *
titles we've confirmed actively and regularly used by Norse rulers
(ex: Jarl - independent count/vassal duke)*

2 — Legendary Historiography **
Later NORSE/Scandinavian historians from the medieval period applying terms to earlier figures
(ex: Stólkonungr - vassal Emperor)**

3 — Mythic Storytelling ***
Titles derived from real Norse sagas (Allsherjarkonungr, for Icelandic emperors or hegemons will be in the next main update)

4 — Linguistic Extrapolation ****
Plausible Old Norse constructions (of all the names on the list, these are the most manufactured)
(ex: Har - High Konungr - King - >Harkonungr for High King - independent king based title)

Authentic where known. Flavorful where needed.

Current Cultural Scope & Future Tweaks

This release currently supports a singular title set pan-Norse experience across: the early start date with the Norse people. In order to prevent a complete loss of immersion and titles - the following cultures were also included until they can be adapted later into more specific time/regional/cultural accuracies based on the in-game culture divide that happens to the Norse culture.

• Norwegian
• Danish
• Swedish
• Icelandic (Old Norse continuity)

In future updates, terminology will diverge more clearly by:

• Region & realm identity (Norse -> Danish/Swedish/Norwegian/Icelandic)
• Century & political evolution (Tribal -> Feudal & Astaru -> Christian)
• Special dynasties and legendary realms (Icelandic titles, due to the nature of the population sizes should be different. Islands north of Scotland like Orkney were often ruled by a Jarl - so county based titles are important)

Your feedback will shape what branches first.

Approach to History

Titles reflect a ruler’s recognized station — what society could refer to them as in third person. Not all titles would necessarily be listed in a direct address, this is NOT an attempt at accurate person to person naming address would be in their historical time period. Social context in these communities meant a person's identity and lineage would be widely known without the need for constant formal introduction.

If you are like me, there is a high chance you'll enjoy this. Seeing a Norse Jarl's son being referred to as Erlingr is historically accurate, even if he wouldn't walk around with that title in front of his name and necessarily be introduced as it everywhere.

Compatibility

• Safe mid-campaign: Yes
• Localization: English
• Compatible with most mods
(UI/title overhauls may require patching)

Mods Recommended by Me

These pair exceptionally well with Norse rulers:

North Sea Hegemony — Turns NSE into a true Hegemony (highly recommended!)

Sourceblood — Genetic god-bloodline progression

Battle Hardened — Battle win tracker & warrior growth (⚠️ Not compatible with TPOB)

The Path of Blood — Achieve immortality through battle

More Tribal holdings — grants tribal level barons - made by MikkyV

Special Thanks to TheGib770 for directing me to some information to do this, I almost built this off CTP but decided to do it from scratch instead for release. Can't wait to see the eventual release of his next mod - Name Packs Expanded, which looks to be incredible - and painstakingly developed for years.[/i]

If you enjoy the mod, please leave a 👍 and comment — it helps immensely! (helps what, I'm not sure, but everyone else says it so I'll say it too. I need to fit in. I must fit in. Please help me fit in.)

Tell me which Norse traditions should get priority in the next refinement. This description was FORMATTED (all the words are my own) with Chatgpt, I'm not wasting time on steam formatting vs modding, my priorities are in place. If you are going to be a jerk in any way possible, expect to have your comments deleted.

Skál!
May your dynasty rise worthy of the sagas.

Sneak peak on some Christian titles coming soon -

Hertug - Vassal Duke
Greifi - Vassal count.
Keisari - Feudal Emperor
Stolkonungr - Tribal Emperor

As christianity came up through Denmark, Norse titles began to change.

The above titles were either given to other european christian rulers (Keisari/Stolkonungr) in norse, or given to norse christian rulers.

Initially, the norse cultures still would use Jarl and some other titles, especially when they were independent (which happened less and less for those smaller realms at this point in time).

Small update of a few tribal/feudal titles, in preparation for the Christian titles I'm working on as I speak.

Look at Hávamál or Kongespeilet for inspiration.. though Kongespeilet depicts later medieval Norwegian(Younger Norse).

Ok so when they split, make sure Norwegian naming and place names are similar to Icelandic, with their own letters and so on.
The Danes, Swedes, Geates all have their way, though sometimes simlar, but the Norse(Norwegians/Norsemen/Nordmenn/Normans) have ours, and Iceland is to this day the carriers of that language which we in Norway lost due to 400 years of Danish occupation.

Great work, but as a Norwegian I think youre treating some of the norse as one big samey group except Icelandic.
Norwegian and Icelandic would be the same, while eastern scandinavian, or eastern Norse is Danish and Swedish.
But Østlandet in Norway is somewhat more similar to their neighbours.

Examples is that in the eastern part of Norway they used the word Konongr, while western Norway and nortwards(Most of Norway in other words) + Iceland used Konungr.

You also have differences between Danes, Swedes and Norwegians, though Norse was more similar to each other then than the languages are today it is important to not for example mix Danish into the Norwegian and so on.
