Pike:

Concept:

Dashing rescue vessel.

Why drive this:
= Fun fast boat
= Quick money maker for early campaign
= Spooky in tall waves but its actually fine
= Cost managed to be available early
= Excellent stepping stone to more boats or larger docks
= Stormlink seating for 7 though 2 are exposed

>>

Pike is designed to dash in and out of home bases conducting rescues. It is fitted for several means of fire fighting, medical care, towing and self-protected parcels. If you are close to the workbench docks and will refuel on respawn there is an openness to enjoying its high speed.

Pike is a cousin derived from the Magic School Boat program like the other cousin the Perch. Of the three Pike has the smallest above water line shape. This also makes her the lightest with the same power train for higher speeds.

Habitation facilities are limited as she is intended to come in and out of ports, necessary for refueling after high speed dashes, where crew comfort is available. There is a crew rest bed and a second could be placed in the back of engineering.
Persons are expected to be withing the cockpit cabin which has taken over the lower hull forward compartment. A full height door with ramp access the outside rear deck. This deck is minimalized in fittings useful more for staging in calm weather. The engine room is a crawl space as is standard in this series of craft.

The price point is aimed that a new Captain could find a few crates or missions to fund trading in the starter RHIB for the Pike. Check your fuel, which also costs money, and fuel up from the starter dock tank.

For those with parcel mods there is “cargo mit” on the open deck. This is for packages to big to come through the hatch. Other than rolling or flipping the boat the cargo is pretty secure from falling out. Without the cost or weight of hinged parts however you get the parcel in it might just come back out. In real life you would put cargo nets and rope lashings around the cargo to finish securing it.

Pike is both fast and fun to pilot. High sea waves washing over the pilot’s view are both terrifying and invigorating. She can deal with situations cycling back to dock for fuel spent on those dashes. She is a good career stepping stone quickly bringing in funds for larger builds.

Such funds could also be used to outfit monitors for maps and a radar suite. Until then guiding her to rescues is still assisted by the gps co-ordinates being easily visible to estimate the direction with a central view compass ball to steer by.

Cost: just under $30,000

Cost can be trimmed further by removing the monitors for the radio and distress locator which can restored with funds from next mission.

Weight: ~3,650kg
Fuel: 3,457 L

Top speed: ~ 90 knots
Limited by hydroplane bouncing
Gear alpha on, gear beta off

Good speed: ~60-65 knots
depending on seas this has only light bouncing

Cruising:
Gear alpha on, gear beta on,
Full throttle 50 knots
First speed up then engage second gear

Paced cruising:
RPS 7.8 – 8.3, 0.87 throttle, 35-37 knots,
Range estimate ~190 knots on light seas
might make arctic if conditions remain favorable

Primary features:

= High visibility pilot station
= “Semi-submarine” fun in heavy seas
= Low center of gravity (there is almost nothing on the deck)
= High speed dash with excellent overdrive cruise performance
= Firefighting by water cannon, handheld hose or extinguisher with fire safety outfit on deck
= Cold weather viable with arctic clothing and a manually activated heater
= Damage control alert for flooding in either compartment or fire in the engine room
= Automatic bilge pump
= Safety minded engine control unit
= Radio
= Distress beacon interpreter
= Medical suite with medical bed, defib and several first aid kits
= Capacity for nine (9) survivors. Sufficient for most small craft mssions.
= Crew bed: One fitted in lower cabin, room for a second in engineering if desired
= Equipment for self repair including welding, underwater welding, scuba and oxygen mask.
= Excellent roll recovery
= Recovered from near static inversion
= Semi-submarine mode with big waves going over your head
= Crew man privacy zone if front of the cabin with bed, room for luggage and curtain rod
= Mini galley in cabin with a kettle tank (starboard side) and heating unit (port side), suitable for basic hot food service such as oatmeal, canned soups or stews, teas, coffee or hot chocolate. No fridge within the allowed budget.
= Toilet seat in cabin

Notes:

= Very happily surprised to see her come out of a nearly perfect static inversion with just gentle seas and the last drips of her own speed left. The relative air capacity of the doorway is a giant air bubble of buoyancy that wants to go up.
= AI movement between cabin and deck is best done with picking them. Its a short distance so this goes quickly.
= You can point the searchlight directly into the cockpit which at night will pretty much blind you.
= Why is there a ladder on only one side of the bow? To run in the pipe for the hose turret which can no longer use the deck as the bridge is now there.
= The “cargo mit” could be done with railings but those cost a lot more to install which is against the cost management of this boat. It can be removed just be careful not to delete the winch controls and to put some blocks in to support the aft facing rope anchor over the winch.

Tweak
With several ropes tied to the anchor in practice its handier to have empty boxes for them near the rear so adjustment made to deck boxes. You still have a hose for refuelling, an electrical for recharge or spare anchor line and now 2 empty boxes to hold at least some of the ropes that spawn tied to the anchor. That is in addition to the anchor being on the electrical line needed to power & control the mag all gripper.

Fixed leaving bed having to be via medical bed. Issues was the decorative piping meant to represent a curtain rod. It actually was enough height to interfere with normal leaving the bed. Easiest fix was to remove the decoration.

Fixed missing "from winch" signal that lights up the indicator on the winch panel when the mag all has made good contact

Update:
= Tweak to large handhelds in the cabin to the side and up to slightly reduce boxes being caught under the ramp, that can still happen but if it got in you can probably get them out. Eventually.
= Top of door house tweaked for more flats as this is useable as a place to stand as a lookout. Found a lot of loot crates floating that way.
= Rearmost low level light moved up by the winch as now with an anchor you really need to see what you are doing there.

Update:
Since I restarted my campaign play this is getting more play and tweaks. Pike will remain a very budget conscious design. Its a good "after starter" boat.
The updates this time are:
= Ramp window shifted down one like in Arctic Pike to act as a slightly higher lookout from inside
= Rope anchors slightly increased on sides for easier dock tie ups
= Damage control board now labelled and unused Indicator changed to paint only
= Rear winch downsized to medium to afford into budget a practical stern anchor, can be used at beaches as well as on shore. Rear is a little odd but it is the same winch as for towing.
