Heavily qualified recommendation: I don't want to be too harsh on a no-budget walking sim/horror game that's only $4 on Steam; the "spot anomalies by inspecting your infinitely looping environment" premise is a clever way to make use of a very limited set of art assets, and some of the anomalies are pretty creepy. That said, at a certain point, trying to find the remaining anomalies gets awfully tedious, especially without anything to track your in-game progression. There are much worse ways to spend an hour or so than playing The Exit 8, but I can't say you'd lose much from watching someone else play through it on YouTube.

The premise of an alternate dimension where forgotten objects from the human world come to life is a strong one, and the 2D art and animation, shamelessly Ghibli-inspired, are generally lovely. Unfortunately, Forgotton Anne isn’t that much fun to actually play, with awfully clunky platforming and a generally very slow feel to everything from movement to animations to puzzle solutions to general pacing. The developers are currently working on a follow-up, Forgotlings, set in the same world but a Metroidvania this time, and hopefully that turns out to be more enjoyable.

Given The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog's title and that it was released as an April Fool's joke, I thought it'd be more of a parody of the Sonic franchise, but it turns out to be a more straightforward execution of its "Sonic characters at a murder mystery party" premise in visual novel form, which is less interesting to me as someone who isn't a particularly ardent fan of the Sonic characters or lore. Still, it's enjoyable enough as a short, free game, even if it should have had controller support.

Also, the deduction minigame sucks, though at least there are accessibility options that remove almost any challenge from it.

I remember seeing the Kickstarter for this back in the day and thinking that it looked more like a pixel artist’s portfolio than an actual game, and well, there you go. Lovely pixel art (albeit buried under a ridiculous amount of chromatic aberration) doesn’t change the fact that the platforming and level design just don’t feel great and that the plot is just the original TRON with an entire fanwiki’s worth of proper nouns piled on. Didn’t play this for very long, admittedly, but it did not make a great first impression.

Undeniably amusing - the PS1/Model 1 aesthetic has its charm, and props for the pro-worker/anti-capitalist message - but feels just too simplistic for a commercially released project, even one that’s only two hours long (if HowLongToBeat is accurate); this could and probably should have been a 15-20 minute game on itch.io. Dropped it when I ran into a progress-blocking bug midway through the fourth chapter and didn’t have much inclination to come back; I might watch a playthrough on YouTube, I guess.

Mediterranea Inferno, in the vein of the developer's previous game Milky Way Prince, is a gay-themed visual novel with horror overtones, in this case about three Italian twinks on their first vacation together post-COVID. It's not going to be for all tastes, no doubt - beyond the gay focus, the protagonists are deliberately often unlikeable - but even as a late-millennial gay man who is by no means a social media influencer or party boy, I found the themes of post-COVID social alienation and despair for the future relatable, which manages to make many of the horror elements all the more disturbing. Also deserves credit for its visuals, which depart from the standard visual novel style by stylishly combining the 2D character art with simple 3D models. Not everything here works - the game is often prone to stating its themes a bit too heavy-handedly and didactically (the true ending does attempt to subvert this, but in a way that's arguably heavy-handed in its own right), but we need more narratively ambitious queer games like this and I'm excited to see what developer Lorenzo Redaelli does next.

one note: as with Milky Way Prince before it, this really needs a better way of speeding through (if not skipping entirely) previously completed parts of the game to redo choices and reach all the endings, there's a "fast" option that slightly mitigates the tedium, but only slightly, and a 5x speed option that would help a lot more if it wasn't only unlocked after you get the true ending (by which point there's a good chance you'll have seen all three of the other endings anyway, though it's possible to reach the true ending after only two of the others).

Solid, short 2.5D physics-based puzzle-platformer with a simple but reasonably compelling time-travel storyline, and level design that nicely conveys the theme of being a small robot in a human-sized house. Suffers from some poorly implemented controls for throwing objects (which a few puzzles revolve around), a few too many instances where it's not clear which objects can be interacted with or traversed over/under, and a climactic chase sequence that doesn't play to the game's strengths, but still worth trying if it's on sale.

Poorly optimized and generally unpolished but fun first-person platformer very loosely based on the works of Franz Kafka, including but not limited to the story of the same title. Voice acting and story are lacking, and the level design feels loose in the way where I couldn’t always tell whether I was progressing in the way the developers intended or merely exploiting the level geometry, but it’s still reasonably enjoyable, with varied environments that solidly convey a sense of being a bug in an oversized world, even when they lean more into fantasy territory.

Played through the initial set of story levels to get to the credits and the "Your real journey is just beginning..." message. Don't think I'm going to bother logging in daily or otherwise engaging much with the F2P GaaS elements, but if you're a fan of Journey or any of the numerous games it inspired, it's still worth checking out (it's free, after all) just to see how it mixes Journey-esque levels with an MMO. The level design, story, and pacing are unsurprisingly not up to par with Journey or other top-tier games in that genre, but I had a number of nice online interactions (either passively, with messages left behind by other players, or by actively interacting with them; another player helped guide me through an obstacle-heavy chunk of one level) that add some interesting flavor to the experience. And even with the obvious graphical limitations resulting from Sky's mobile origins, the art direction is still quite nice to look at.

The gameplay admittedly doesn't take full advantage of its "draw your own rail to grind on" conceit - you don't actually have that much control over the boomerang's trajectory, so in practice, you're mainly either using it as a super jump or to flip switches - but for a free game that takes maybe half an hour to complete, it's fun enough.
