I haven't played too many free student-made games of late, but Atan is one of the best I've played in a while, an impressively polished effort that combines somewhat Jusant-esque streamlined climbing mechanics with more traditional 3D platforming and a focus on solving simple environmental puzzles involving giant mechanisms. Atan is quite short and ends somewhat abruptly, at a point where it feels like it could easily have continued iterating and expanding on its mechanics for at least a few more levels, but hey, it's a free student-made game, so that's forgivable.

played this on iPhone a decade or so ago; the various interlocking puzzles and physicality of the presentation still hold up pretty well when played on PC with a mouse and feel generally satisfying to interact with and solve, though there are a few overly obtuse puzzles that I wouldn't have been able to figure out without the hint system

Possibly the most ridiculously over-the-top entry in the franchise to date, continuing RE7's story and iterating on its first-person gameplay while abandoning its more grounded setting and villains in favor of of an RE4-esque European village (where everyone speaks with an American accent, for some reason), giant vampire women, werewolves, and a mad scientist with Magneto-like control over metal, with pieces of the protagonist's infant daughter, who is somehow not dead despite having been cut up into pieces and placed in jars, serving as MacGuffins for most of the game. Final hour or so goes too far into full-on shooter territory for my taste (the next-to-last boss fight in particular is ridiculous and fun but doesn't feel like it belongs in an RE game), but the pacing and variety kept me on board all the way through.

Extremely tedious and dull to play by design; the narrative probably would have been at least interesting enough to get me to complete it, except that I accidentally quit (which is too easy to do if you're near one particular door) and lost all my progress midway through. I can't fault the pricing and I admire Strange Scaffold for trying something so weird and experimental, but I don't think you'd get much of anything out of actually attempting to play this when you could just watch a playthrough on YouTube instead.

free prologue to Life is Strange 2 is a generally charming narrative game about a superhero-obsessed boy using his fantasies to cope with his mother's death and father's alcoholism. Can't really judge its handling of the heavier issues of alcoholism and child abuse until I see how Chris' story is continued in LIS2, but I intend to do that shortly.

one of the more popular recent entries in the oversaturated "horror game about cursed children's media" niche. Having played it, I confess I don't quite get the hype; the VHS tapes of the titular TV series are the most interesting part, but they still aren't doing anything *that* distinctive (ooOOOOOOooooohhh, glitch effects and Amanda getting angry and talking about death, how disturbing). the game design is a much bigger failure; you sometimes need to rewatch previously viewed tapes to access new puzzles, but the game doesn't just store those tapes near the TV like you'd expect; no, you have to repeat previously completed puzzles to get those tapes to materialize. It's a system that's either too obtuse for its own good or just buggy, as even while following a walkthrough, I couldn't get one of the tapes required to access the "good" ending to reappear. Just watch a YouTube playthrough instead.

Also: this game is out on consoles, yet the devs still couldn't be bothered to patch controller support into the PC version. Boo.

Solid enough horror game (more action-horror than survival horror, IMO), with decent visuals and an intriguing New Age cult-gone-wrong premise. The melee-focused combat, while it distinguishes The Chant from most horror games with combat in present-day settings, isn't particularly great, and the story falls short, with an ill-defined supernatural threat and with the cult's villainy not really developed beyond cliched tropes. Still, it's relatively well-paced, with a reasonably short length that doesn't feel bloated, and I generally enjoyed the atmosphere, puzzles, and exploration. Worth a play for horror fans if you can get it on sale.

Fun traversal mechanics (especially when on water), a likeable cast of characters, and strong voice acting, undermined by repetitive objective and level design that start to wear thin even at Wavetale's short length; I'd still have played through to the end and given a warmer review if I hadn't encountered a series of increasingly frustrating platforming sequences later on, with finicky controls and unclear level design that makes it overly difficult to figure out your path to the switch you need to flip or another objective. Would recommend only on deep discount.

As someone not exactly familiar with Sámi culture, I enjoyed the novel setting and mythology depicted here, and the visuals are generally nice (though optimization isn't what it could be on PC). Unfortunately, as you progress further into the game and the platforming mechanics become more involved (you periodically acquire new abiilities, and the level design increasingly demands that you use several or all of them in a single series of jumps), Skábma ultimately becomes too janky for me to recommend, with some very clunky controls and readability issues that make it difficult to tell which paths are intended to be traversable. If you have more patience than I did, you might be able to put up with Skábma's faults long enough to complete it, but I gave up around chapter 6 or so.

a pretty clever conceit for a first-person walking sim/adventure (you're trying to solve crimes by exploring memories, but those memories have been modeled in 3D by an AI that doesn't fully understand them, resulting in glitches you need to sort out), but too janky for its own good; I couldn't figure out how to use an early key item to advance the story, after which said item disappeared, leaving me with no way of progressing. If this is the director's cut, I'm not sure I want to know what the original version of The Signifier was like.
