9S18M3 Buk-M3 Target Acquisition Radar

The 9S18 family began life as the Kupol / “Snow Drift” 3D radar for the original Buk (SA-11) system, providing long-range target detection and basic identification for multiple firing batteries. Over time it evolved through 9S18M1 and 9S18M1-3, adding improved clutter rejection, frequency agility and extended detection range up to around 150–160 km against typical air targets.

For the latest 9K317M Buk-M3, the radar component is represented by the three-axis 9S18M3, a coherent-pulse centimetric radar with electronic beam steering in elevation and mechanical scanning in azimuth. It is mounted on the GM-5969 tracked chassis and sends its air picture via digital datalink to the 9S510M command post, which in turn distributes targets to the 9A317M and 9A316M launchers.

Serial Buk-M3 production, including 9S18M3 radars, is reported from around 2016 onward, with the system seeing operational use in the late 2010s and 2020s. Open-source reports from the Ukraine conflict confirm 9S18M3 deployment, noting its ability to detect air targets at up to roughly 160 km, while also highlighting its value as a high-priority target in modern warfare.

In game, the 9S18M3 is a Target Acquisition Radar of the Buk-M3 battalion. It is the second most capable radar system of the Buk-M3 family as it's capable of up to 20 km Search and Track. There are two disadvantages being the slow update rate of the targets which cannot perform great on closer distances and a manual pitch control of the radar beam.

The vehicle is also fitted with an electro optical system capable of Tracking up to 8 km for slow moving targets and 4 km for fast moving targets.

All vehicles have implemented a system that if target is lost it will continue leading the target based on its last known coordinates
