Updated for 1.17! Here are the change notes:

-added Quick Duel system and game rule
-Characters with a high Vengefulness personality rating are more likely to get battlefield duel opportunities if a grudge target, rival, or nemesis is in the opposing army
-A character's grudge target, rival, or nemesis is more likely to be picked as a battlefield duel target if present in the opposing army (this applies regardless of personality)

It already works for the current version and the 1.17 patch notes don't look like it'll affect it.

However, I will be updating it soon to add a long-awaited feature, but I'll do so after Tuesday in case an update is required for the Coronations patch.

It would be nice if there was a "lead from rear" toggle somewhere that reduced your odds of a duel but also lowered your "leading own troops" bonus.

Likelihood of getting an attacking duel opportunity is affected by personality, both in general (the Boldness, Energy, and (when fighting religious enemies) Zeal personality attributes make duels more likely) and in specific (traits like Wrathful, Brave, Berserker and Shieldmaiden, and Impatient make duels more likely)

Introducing some weighting for available rivals/nemeses as battlefield duel targets is a great idea and I'll throw it in shortly (it is already there for things like "does the AI decide to kill you if they beat you?" or "what is the stress impact of a given post-duel choice?")

Is the frequency / likelihood of a duel occurring affected by personality? I'd like to get into duels more often but without just jerking up the frequency game rule and having 6 knights die in every battle. It would also be really cool if you were more likely to enter a duel with your rival / nemesis if they're an enemy knight.

@Rappers: Haven't played CK3 since Khans but I looked at the script when the patch dropped and didn't see any necessary updates, plus I'm running a test game on 1.16.2.3 right now and things seem to be normal. Could you or anyone else reporting issues go into any more detail about what's going wrong on your end?

You should add a duel event for certain type of assassinations where you can try to defend yourself from the assassin in a duel.

@jaimeravachi: Prowess does not directly increase the chances, no. Some things that increase Prowess also increase the chances, but the short answer is: have a more aggressive personality, or a zealous one if you're fighting religious enemies.

@Tito: the "leading from front" status is defined in common/scripted_triggers/msc_scripted_triggers.txt.

@Moireach: honestly I haven't had time to check, I should be able to look into it this weekend.

Does having more prowess increases the chance of getting more duel events? Do I get more events by having 100 prowess than having say, 16 prowess? Or is it just the same no matter the prowess, just that you have more thatn 15?

Currently if you have less than 15 prowess (or 10 with the Stalwart Leader perk from Martial) you're way less likely to receive battlefield duel events as a commander because you are assumed not to be "leading from the front". I do plan to code a decision to choose this status yourself, but until then that's probably the cause of what you're seeing.

yes my character is the commander.
I just checked and most characters had between 5 and 10 prowess.
i dont think any other mod tampers with battle events and I have yours pretty low in the modlist, the only ones even lower being VIET, RICE, CFP, EPE, CE and its compatibility patches.

I play with RICE and VIET and they work together just fine. Is your character in command of the army in battle? What is their prowess? Are you using any other battle event mods?

I dont know if im doing anything wrong, but I play with this mod for a few weeks now and fought a few battles since then, but when my ruler is leading the army, not once have I seen one of the duel events. Im playing with the default chance of duels appearing. I also play with RICE and VIET, is it possible that these mods, being event heavy, somehow arent compatible?

Losing a battlefield duel will always at least add a level of the wounded trait, which will decrease health. If they were already wounded, levels 2 and 3 of the wounded trait can drop health significantly, which might be what you're seeing.

Being captured on its own just gives the prowess penalty - it's mostly a way to remove them from the battle without making you re-raise them as knights if you win.

yes but usually the health doesn´t drop as much, characters usually only get the wounded trait or die. What does happen is that if they lose and get imprisoned while the battle is still going ,their prowess drops by 1000.

Assuming that you're not having knights lose three duels in a single battle (which will kill them regardless of the deadliness rule), is there perhaps some other mod loading after this one overriding the single_combat_events.txt file? I think it would still _work_ in that situation but some of the functions added by this mod like that would break.

@PakmunD: mostly they replace the base game combat events (at least the "knight/commander wounded" or "knight/commander killed" combat events, which do the same thing as this mod but in less interesting ways)

@Uncle: I should be able to add something like that pretty quickly, I'll see about slipping it into the 1.15 update.

@Stray: I'll check if there were breaking script changes in 1.14.1 but it's still working fine for me, are you using it with any TCs or other mods that mess with combat phase events or single combat? What exactly is the issue you're seeing - I assume you mean that battlefield duels don't show up?

It's mostly compatible - 1.14 didn't change anything relevant to it. I am planning to update soon anyway with some small changes in response to feedback, but it should work as is..
