By request, 3:1 Megalomaniac version is now here:

Very large would be too small, so Megalomaniac would the better option I think to capture the feel of the original map.

There is something buggy in the map editor -- if I import the 3:1 heightmap into a 3:1 Huge map I get the null squares in the screenshots below, but it works normally in 3:1 VeryLarge (one size smaller) and 3:1 Megalomaniac (one size bigger). Would you have a preference between VeryLarge and Megalomaniac?

Tried importing again, same problem in same place, I can't explain it:

I will have to investigate further at a later time.

An embarrassingly-simple solution, thank you. I have rewritten the heightmap to 3:1 with added water, my first attempt at it went slightly weird (two large blocks of terrain showing up null, something weird in the map generator). I will try again tomorrow. I'm not sure if I have the inspiration to spend another 6 hours decorating the map with trees as I did this one...

Would it be possible when using a 1:3 map, to use the 1:2.66 heightmap and by placing it on the east side of the map, you could make the west blank unused area water? That way the aspect ratio of the actual map is still 1:2.66 and to scale.

It's not the size (the heightmap will scale to Tiny or Large or Megalomaniac) but the aspect ratio that's the limiting factor.

Gizbit's map is Huge 1:4 10x40km, so that's 12km squished into into just 10, with Huge 1:3 you have 11.5km to work with so the squish isn't so extreme. Although now I guess it would also have to be stretched west to east (32.1km to 34.5km)? I would hate to lose any destinations especially Horseshoe Bay as it was in a interesting location and a challenge to get to. Not sure which one would be the best tbh.

Megalomaniac 1:3 might be another option? 13.5km with a 1:2.66 ratio goes to 35.91km so you're left with 4km missing.

The original heightmap data I created for TpF1 has a ratio of 1:2.66
It would be possible to crop it to 1:3 while retaining most features, but you lose either Horseshoe Bay (and some North Shore mountains), or Roberts Bank and White Rock.
I guess the third option is just to squish it to fit at the expense of distorting the geography somewhat (11% north-south compression).
Which option would be best, in your opinion?
fatfluffycat 2020 年 9 月 24 日 上午 10:54
I see, I was trying to recreate my TpF1 save with gizbit's version and noticed that while it captures the same area across the width it does so on a slightly smaller scale and is more compressed. Although it goes way farther out than Agassiz and into the Mountains.

The TpF1 version was 7.5 x 20 miles (12.07 x 32.2 km) and the closet size available to that is Huge 1:3 (11.5 x 34.5 km). Megalomaniac 1:4 is 12 km across but is a whopping 48 km long. I have no knowledge on creating a custom map so sorry if this is wrong, I'm just someone who really loves this map.

@fatfluffycat: As far as I know the map editor is still "broken" in that you can only import heightmaps in integer ratios from 1:1 through 1:5. Therefore the TpF2 version is a bit cropped from the TpF1 version, and there's not much I can do about that, sorry.
fatfluffycat 2020 年 9 月 24 日 上午 9:44
Is it still not possible to have a map similar to the TpF1 version that passes Agassiz with the heightmap?
SoftwareSimian  [作者] 2020 年 2 月 11 日 上午 11:16
@retard: I have posted a TpF2 version of my full Vancouver Island map . In a few day I will try to release a version of the southern half (Victoria to Campbell River) which I personally enjoy more since there's not really much north of Campbell River / Tofino, and the distances / terrain scale can be a little more realistic.
SoftwareSimian  [作者] 2020 年 2 月 11 日 上午 5:32
@retard: yes, I'll port my Vancouver Island and Vancouver Island South maps to TpF2 sometime. The broken map editor in TpF2 was giving me problems, if they hadn't broken the map system I would've released all my maps on day 1, but it's severely crippled with regards to map aspect ratios for heightmaps. But I'll give it another attempt sometime.

any chance of a Vancouver Island map coming?
SoftwareSimian  [作者] 2020 年 1 月 4 日 上午 5:08
@Supreme Guardian: Your OS would attempt to fake it by swapping to HDD, leading to poor performance. I would strongly recommend that you have 16GB+ of physical RAM before attempting to play a map of this size.
Supreme Guardian 2020 年 1 月 4 日 上午 2:53
can't use 13 Gb of ram if you don't have 13 Gb of ram
