Or maybe more supply drops strewn around the map, with either additional food/water, or outpost components, or outpost "furnishing" including hydroponics/water station; the more valuable stuff, the further away the supply drops.
Don't know if it's possible to randomize the supply drop coordinates (better to choose between preset coord), but if that was a thing, that would give a lot of replayability/discovery to the scenario.
Regarding the consumables vs. the progress, I had only been able to expand the printer to 2x2x4 and print the water dispenser and hydroponics module when my food/water supplies ran out. I'd say doubling the supplies amount would have helped me survive. Note that I was basically always running around, seeing how that only increased oxygen consumption, not calories/water burn ratios.
