Seasons

Adds major seasonal cycles to the game.

Each season lasts several normal cycles.
Each season brings slightly different behaviour.

WORK-IN-PROGRESS may still have bugs or crash

NOT READY FOR PLAYING - YET


The days will lengthen and shorten.
The terrain will slightly shift look.
Plants might grow faster or slower.
Wind might blow stronger or less.
Weather will change over time.
Water might get more or less or red.

Beavers might get more hungry in winter.

+ allow to apply seasonal effects to single weather


# For mod makers:

Anything is possible to change with json or png assets.

It might not support mods that mess with weather system / cycles.

Known to work with moddable weather (settings mostly ignored), timber commons and ebb&flow.

good start tho! I think 4 cyles sounds a bit better for variety, but I suppose there can always be a config slider for that?
I suppose I just really like the idea of speedy beavers building dams and filling warehouses at breakneck speeds fueled by the power of fresh wallnuts xP

it does currently start with a cosy spring and some growth boost. summer will be slightly dry to make beavers build dams and store water, while autumn should make them stockpile.

current winter is somewhat simple. half water, half plant growth. slightly more hunger.
that's gonna change still.

also 5 cycles per season or 20 per year now. not sure it might get 4 / 16 instead.

while I am already sharing my possibly half baked ideas: Assuimg the game starts in summer, that one should probably be pretty vanilla for setting up time. And since both spring and winter would be rougher, it might be nice to buff the growth rate of tree products, maybee even give beavers speed boosts for the season from eating them? (like the bot buffs)
Frantic harvesting and stockpiling before the long winter is my kinda vibe

hmm, maybee I should actually explain what I mean and dont just say it...
With "flash freeze" I mean just pausing the waters flow, negating its irrragation and shading it a whiteish light blue shape.
It wouldnt be solid to build on, but maybee dont allow normal beavers pathing to walk through it unless they are whitepaws?

If making the water gradually freeze and thaw at the edges for all of winter (which would be absolutely amazing but also sounds tough as nails to implement and balance) is too complex, I reckon an "easier" way to do it would be to maybe have some visual only ice chunks effects during winter (maybe lessen pump and irrigation effectiveness for gameplay) and then have everything kind of flash freeze in the end of cycle crisis. If you go the route of special crisis, you could also add a surge flood variant for spring (the other feature I just happen to have been craving for years) , where there's alot MORE water coming in from ice melting upstream. (at least that one I recon would be easy to code by just temporarily modifying water source strengths?)

for the freezing over... i really really like that, but am stuck tbh.

i can add a visual of floating ice easy enough maybe 🤔

once i make it 'solid' it's a mess of conflicts i fear.. like there's path and bridges and stuff in the water.. the water has dynamic height too and all, but neither mass nor structure to carry anything yet. and usually ice would form on top first..

will need a lot of thinking and trying out and thus be something late on my list.

another issue is leaving room for ice&snow faction. would want to leave some room for those.

@Alcator in a few weeks, when this is more complete i will add more pictures and such. Still mostly sorting ideas and figuring out balancing for vanilla factions (this was made for whitepaws initially).

woah, just what I was looking for, pushed straight to my suggestion page. awesome.
I'll +1 that water partially freezing during winter idea. Main thing ive been missing since the very first playthrough <3
