FFS Ammo Counter and Reload Patch

FFS is one of the most iconic and beloved weapon mods on the Starbound Workshop known for its incredibly detailed firearms and clever workarounds to the game’s engine limitations.

However, while the mod is still fantastic, the original gameplay systems could feel a bit punishing in modern playthroughs. So I decided to update and streamline the experience while keeping the spirit of the mod fully intact.




Changes

  • **Weapons now use ammunition instead of energy.**
    No more draining your entire energy bar just to fire your gun. Ammo is tracked per weapon.

  • **Drawing animations only play once.**
    Swap weapons freely without seeing the same animation over and over.

  • **Staged Reloading.**
    If you interrupt a reload, you’ll resume from where you left off instead of starting over.

  • **Movement penalties removed.**
    Keep your mobility while firing and reloading.

  • **Ammunition persists across weapon swaps.**
    Guns remember how much ammo they have left even when you switch to another weapon.




To-Do

  • Patch compatibility for additional FFS addons.
    (Addons with custom LUA currently still use the original energy-based system.)

  • A custom UI element to display ammo count.

  • True persistence across weapon slots.
    Currently, equipping the same gun in both hands treats them as separate ammo states.




Notes
This patch does not overwrite or break other FFS addons. The only limitation is that addons using their own LUA logic will still use the old energy mechanics until individually patched.




Feel free to report issues, suggest improvements, or share balance feedback. I want the final version of this patch to feel smooth, intuitive, and true to the original mod’s style just with less frustration compared to others guns.

So as of right now, for FFS:Extended (my version), it breaks the FM Firelance, the R'SR Frost Nova, and the GL-29. Other than that, it works great.

As a side effect, it fixes dual weilding/Akimboing from FFS: DaE (I do wonder if I should move that functionality over to FFS: Tweaks though.)

Fantastic! This should fix the issue with RPG growth disabling energy lock with mages level 32 tech and giving inf ammo because of it.

Even the removal of the semi fire scopes adds much needed cleanup of screen clutter imo. i would toss more awards your way when this is complete :D

Absolutely fantastic must have mod if you are using FFS and are running a MUCH harder setting like me where it's basically GIC without the bs

This is a long due change to the ffs guns that the original devs had planned to do but abandoned the mod as a whole, many thanks for your work, take your time to flesh it out further.
