Map Overlay Updated(ish) [Deprecated - New Link in Description]

This is now outdated.

Please head here to download DarkRoku's updated version.

As I mentioned below I wasn't gonna be maintaining this. I'm going to leave it up for those who are playing older versions of the game, however this should be viewed as broken for all future updates including Prehistoric and any subsequent patches.




I was shocked that no other mods that did this kind of thing existed, and that this one was having some compatibility issues. Thankfully, I saw DarkRoku12's comment mentioning his pull request, so I yoinked the Github files to compile it together and make it work.

The following objects are highlighted in the map overview:
  • Geysers: All Geysers, Vents, Volcanos and Fissures from the base game, the "Spaced Out" DLC, any future updates and mods. Plus Oil Reservoirs (technically not Geysers) and Neutronium, so you can spot buried Geysers.
  • Critters: All Critters from the base game, the "Space Out" DLC, and... you know the text already
  • Plants: The same, but with plants
  • Buildings: Printing Pod, Anti-Entropy Thermo-Nullifiers (AETNs) and Neural Vacillators from the base game, Port-a-Pods, Cryotanks, Teleporters and Warp Pipes from the "spaced Out" DLC
  • Biomes: All biomes
I take no responsibility for anything, and I probably won't maintain this moving forward, so if you like the mod please do so (Especially if you can get YMS's approval, though he seems to be MIA and has been for a few years).

The mod functions mostly fine, though I did notice some laggy movement when the overlay was turned on, but that could be as simple as being too zoomed out or any number of minor mods making it a bit worse performance-wise. (Pro tip, use a fresh install when debugging. I am lazy. Do not do a me.)

Massive props to YMS for the original Map Overlay and also DarkRoku12 for the Github repository[github.com] which included the files he updated to fix the compatibility quirks it was having with the Frosty Planet DLC. Those should be resolved now.

I take no credit for anything, all I did was compile the mod.

Adios, hopefully the mod doesn't break.

@WhiteWolf I'm not sure but that error looks like either another mod doing something, or a game update has slightly adjusted how mods are handled internally. I'm not a modder nor very decent with code, but it doesn't seem to be concerning mainly because it still successfully loads. In any case it should(?) be safe(?) I think. It definitely isn't a catastrophic error, that would be much clearer in the log. Worst case with that error either some things won't display properly related to the mod, or the mod just won't work at all.

I get a warning during the mod init:

@MEker, it's an overlay, not a different screen to open. Just push the button on the overlay menu, as shown in the screenshot for the mod.

@funnbobby2001 Idk about "active" but that's the repo I downloaded to compile the mod. Assuming he hasn't updated it since the date I uploaded this, it's the same files

Hello. Is the repository you link to above still the active one, or did you create a new one? Just wanting to explore how the mod is made for my own edification. :)

okay, I understand, I didn't mean what the critter aspect is currently doing, first you have to dig out the hatches and then the mod can handle them, but I would like to know what's there before I dig them out

I'm not a dev, you'd have to ask someone who knows how to do that. Like I mentioned, I just compiled this one using some github files that corrected some incompatibilities.

That said I think the critter aspect of this one does show buried critters like Hatch and Vole

Could you possibly develop a buried hatch, seeds, and mockroot overlay?
