This mod uses a custom .exe and requires a special installation. It's only compatible with some superficial mods (models, sounds, HC+ exclusive mods ...)

The mod is partially compatible with non-Steam versions – when not using Steam, use the NODRM .exe - mind the fact that depending on what you're using, it may not be DLC or multiplayer compatible (Epic for example).

Step 0:
Copy & paste your Barony folder (so you can switch between Vanilla/Modded and update more easily).

Ideally, you will use a fresh Barony folder. If it's not fresh, delete the following files:
- everything in Barony/savegames, including the Steam autocloud file
- scores.dat in the main folder
- scores_multiplayer.dat in the main folder
- models.cache in the main folder

Ideally also disable savegame cloud syncing for Barony in the Steam library. Otherwise it could try to load vanilla saves into HC+ from the cloud and crash your game.

Step 1:
Subscribe to the mod and start Barony (so it downloads the files). Go to steamapps/workshop/content/371970 where it will be saved.

Step 2:
Open the folder 3209909956 inside steamapps/workshop/content/371970. Copy & paste the files into the copy of your Barony folder (Steam\steamapps\common\Barony). It will ask you to replace files. Confirm.

Step 3:
Done! To play HC+, run the game from your modded folder.

Step 4 (optional):
Add the HC+ .exe as a non-steam game to your Steam library, this lets you boot HC+ directly from Steam for added convenience.

Remember to ENABLE HARDCORE MODE in the game flags! Not enabling it won't break anything but this mod is balanced around hardcore mode! It's the only curated experience.



This mod aims to make Barony even harder, restructuring the game in the process, reworking and balancing mechanics while adding new content to accomodate the new experience.

Barony Hardcore+ provides a longer, more challenging playthrough meant for everyone who has mastered the mechanics of the vanilla game.

It's also meant to fit within the game's established lore, slightly altering the course of events.

Changes include:

- Class and Race reworks: From Barbarians being able to go into rage mode, to Wizards using a Scepter as a spell-firing machine gun, Arcanists channeling spells through ranged weapons, Merchants having access to VIP areas ... HC+ adds new and exciting ways of experiencing Barony, making races and classes more unique! Almost every race and class have been reworked or changed!

- No branching paths: Every area in the game is visited in order. After beating the twins, you return to Hamlet invaded by demons ... Follow Baphomet's minions into the Underworld and bring peace to the realm once and for all.

- Reworked skills: New legendary bonuses, slower leveling for weapons to incentivize specialization (details below)

- Reworked monster curve: Fight against buffed monster variations like the levitating glider spider and groups of enemies that force you to use all of the skills you've collected by mastering the base game.

- Reworked secret levels: Almost no secret level is the same. Be ready to work REALLY hard for your artifacts.
- Miniboss encounters on every biome transition: Need a breather? Sorry, those bridges aren't areas of peace anymore.

- Adds 5 new artifact items (the artifact shield, artifact knuckles and 3 legendary grimoires which teach you powerful, specialized damage spells)

- 4 new secret levels! Conquer the Ancient Tomb, visit the dreamlike domain of a renegade incubus and his clique, discover Sky Town, the first goatman settlement in the mortal realm, and conquer the Insectoid Hive, an incredibly challenging level, only for the toughest of Barony champions!

How do I switch between this mod and vanilla Barony?

You can simply have multiple folders of Barony on your PC. Rename whichever folder contains the version you currently want to play to "Barony" under your /steamapps/ path.

I don't like secret levels not spawning unless I make it in time! Can I disable it?

Yup! There's a game flag that replaces Classic mode from base Barony.

Can you add [insert my great idea here]?

I like to consider every cool idea that is within the scope of the project. The feedback that will most likely be heard is in regards to balance/stability of the existing mod features.

There are no plans for big content additions since Barony is still in development. Remember that every Barony update will break the mod! The more content a mod has, the harder it will be to update so it's best to stay conservative.

Is this compatible with [insert mod here]?

This mod is not compatible with any other .json or .exe modifying mod. Texture, model, music swaps should all be fine.

I hate the AI voice acting in Ozyx' Domain. What do I do?

Rename the map file "fskincustom" to something else and rename "fskincustom_novoice" to "fskincustom"!

Will there be a crossover with other mods?

None are planned.

Troubleshooting

If you find any major issues (gamebreaking bugs and especially crashes), let me know either through here or ideally Discord (tag me on the official Barony Discord, in #modding-general).

For crashes: Footage of crashes is greatly appreciated. Crashlogs are sadly not very useful so footage is ideal to narrow down the cause of a crash.

If your game crashes/freezes after updating to 3.0+ or downloading it for the first time, delete your savefiles and the scores files in the main folder. Also disable savefile cloud syncing in the Steam Library for Barony. The savefiles are not compatible and a mismatch will sadly crash the game.

Known issues/bugs

- Certain multiplayer related issues (you couldn't pay me to figure out the netcode properly):
-- Various weird things may happen at high ping
-- Effects for Vanguard and Vampiric Resilience don't show up for clients (just visual, they work mechanically)
-- Light spawned by Arcanist channeling is only visible for hosts, not clients
-- When multiplayer clients eat Aquamarine as Automaton, the magic resistance on the character sheet will not improve after 1 Aquamarine. This is purely visual.
-- Disabling monster race abilities is technically not supported - certain things (like Human's Zeal ability) won't be applied to guised monster races.
