People requested I build a walking dragline so here it is...wait...this isn't a walking dragline...and also..what's a walking dragline?

A walking dragline is a type of excavator that is so big and so massive that it can't move on tracks. It has a big round thing on which it sits and can rotate but can't move forward and back. To move it, huge steel legs make it crawl its way backwards. It's pretty cool to see such a huge machine pick itself up, move backwards and land back on its belly then repeat the cycle.

Stormworks being Stormworks...it just wouldn't have the walking thing work properly. I spent many hours working on trying to make it work and the best I got was an extremely slow and very unreliable walker. I let it walk on its own and after 40mins I still wasn't out of FJ's hangar. At this point it became an obsession for me to see it walk out the hangar but I came to the realization that it would just take too long and be too impractical. So I deleted the legs and replaced them with tracks and now it works! It's not a walking dragline anymore but besides the big moving legs, we get drop down tracks and everything else is the same.

To keep the text from being too long, I'll skip the Kriger roleplay here and go straight to the Operations instructions:

You can get it fully operational in 11 steps and I've numbered the steps as screenshots in the images above.

Climb aboard, go to the machinery room and you'll hear the compressor working. Engines are started with air and they won't be ready which means you have time to do other stuff:

1- (screenshot no 1) - At the back of the machinery room you'll see a door that says ROOF ACCESS; go through it and climb up to the roof then find a little booth looking thing and grab the handle inside
2- On your right you have the boom angle. Those big draglines don't move the boom up and down during operations so we set it up once and leave it like that. The boom needs to be at 27degrees-ish
3- Use the BOOM WINCH UP to raise the boom until the supports touch the gantry. Don't do it in one shot as the whole thing will swing up too hard. Once the supports touch the gantry, you'll be at around 26degrees
4- Use the BOOM SUPPORT WINCH UP to take off the slack in the support line and touch it very gently until you reach 27 degrees. To make it too tight otherwise the main supports won't be able to do their job and support.
5- This step illustrates what it should look like (as in image 5) for both the boom main supports and the support lines

By that time, as you're going back down the Machinery room, you'll hear the compressor stop; you are ready to start 1 engine. Go to an engine and HOLD the PRE-LUBRICATION button for 3seconds until the READY light comes on then FLIP the AIR VALVE SWITCH and TURN THE AIR STARTER KEY. This will dump air in the engine and start it. When you see the RUNNING light come on, TURN OFF the AIR VALVE SWITCH otherwise you won't be able to start the second engine. Move the GOVERNOR UP to about 50%

6- Now since the compressor is running, let's resume the setup steps. Because of a Stormworks limitation, the BUCKET cable cannot be connected when spawning and so that's why we have the little YELLOW block thing attached to the HOIST winch as in image (and step) 6. Use HOIST DOWN to lower it from the main OPERATOR'S CAB
7- (image 7) shows the right height of the YELLOW block thing
8- Go back in the MACHINERY ROOM and use the R Service Winch UP to bring in the YELLOW block thing and it should look like image 8 (we're nearly there)
9- Detach the TOP rope from the YELLOW block thing BUT KEEP IT IN YOUR HAND. (if you disconnect it from the GANTRY PULLEY: you have to RESPAWN the thing)
10- With the rope IN YOUR HAND go UP the main boom all the way to the top. It's a dangerous job so I hope you have insurance
11- You're reached the end of the setup steps and of the boom; CONNECT the rope to the PULLEY at the end of the boom.
Head back down, go to the machinery room and start the second engine using the same procedure as the first one.
Go to the OPERATOR'S CAB and turn on the GAUGE LIGHTS and VHF and you're ready to DIG!

MOVING THE MACHINE:
Assuming you've done all of the steps above. When it's time to move, you need to generate more power so go to the MACHINERY ROOM and crank both engines at 100%.
Back in the OPERATOR'S CAB, enable PROPEL MODE and LOWER the TRACKS. Get on the OPERATOR'S SEAT and use W/S to start moving. To TURN, use LEFT/RIGHT when in PROPEL MODE this will act as a TRACK BRAKE.
When you're done moving, bring the throttle as close to zero as you can, LIFT the TRACKS and DISABLE PROPEL mode. Now when using LEFT/RIGHT you'll be SWINGING the Dragline.

External lights:
External lights are all independant of the machine and for them to stay on for a long time you'll need to head to the back and find the door that says LIGHT PLANT and turn on the Generator for the lights

I'm happy I can help! :)

I was watching some old mining vehicle safety videos from the 70's and I was like I want to drive big shovels in storm works. This has fulfilled that desire. :)

All right :)

Ah, i turned off the key. Not the valve. I'll try again this afternoon.

I confirm it works so it is most likely something you missed or something else you are doing. Please try again as it might certainly be me not writing the instructions properly so please if you find out what you missed let me know and I'll write the instructions more clearly.

@Puncake I had a look and everything works as normal with the engines.
a few notes:
You need to wait for the Compressor to reach at least 59psi to be able to start one engine
You do NOT touch the fuel valves. Those are for FUEL SHUTOFF.
When the Compressor reaches 59psi you pre-lube ONE engine and wait until the light comes on then you SWITCH ON the Air Valve and turn the AIR STARTER key. When the engine running light comes on you SWITCH OFF the Air Valve but leave the AIR STARTER key on. That will start the engine and then you can throttle up to about 50% but before starting the second engine you need to wait for the compressor to reach at least 59psi and you repeat the same starting instructions but for the second engine.

Let me check

Not sure what's wrong, followed the steps very carefully. Too bad, this i s a pretty nice creation
Puncake 2024 年 1 月 28 日 上午 3:59
Okay. So. I followed all the steps. Engines won't run. Doesn't seem to be any fuel?

You'd definitely need a modified workbench for that. This dragline takes the full length and height of FJ Warner dock's spawn point.
