You do not need to, but I recommend (and am going to assume), you leave your Ion Thrusters ON all the time.

Recommended Liftoff Procedure
- at least have a full tank of hydrogen, and it's always a good idea to fill your O2/H2 Generator with Ice
- keep ship level with horizon for entirety of transition (as indicated on HUD)
- begin ascending with Atmospheric and Small Hydrogen Thrusters only
- when you start to lose speed turn on your Large Hydrogen Thrusters
- pulse your Large Hydrogen Thrusters on and off allowing your speed to drop a little below maximum before boosting back up (this is for fuel efficiency)
- at around 0.5G you can turn your Atmospheric Thrusters off
- when you no longer lose speed while your Hydrogen Thrusters are off you can leave them off

Recommended Landing Procedure
- enter planetary gravity and level ship with the horizon (as indicated on HUD)
- turn Atmospheric and Small Hydrogen Thrusters ON and all other thrusters OFF
- fall into the atmosphere (inertial dampeners off)
- when you near the surface (~1,000 to 3,000 meters) turn inertial dampeners back on
- you may need to use your Large Hydrogen Thrusters to slow yourself further
- if all else is failing use your parachutes! (press [ctrl] and [3] together, then [3] again)
- Atmospheric Thrusters alone will be sufficient to hover and you can use the Small Hydrogen Thrusters (or even Ion) to maneuver for landing (save your hydrogen)
