Just when I thought the Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1&2 Remasters couldn't blow my mind further, the Defiance Remaster blew my mind again and more.

[This review will talk about the quality of the Remaster as opposed to aspects inherent to the original Defiance. I had played the original Defiance on PS2 thoroughly in my youth, and I have played through the remaster twice.]

The original graphics already looked incredible for their time (looking early-PS3 for a mid-PS2 game) but the remastered graphics paired with the new shading are a sight to behold.
The new camera, replacing the original Devil May Cry-like fixed camera, is a massive improvement to the gameplay, letting you experience familiar levels in a new way. Both the original camera and graphics can be separately toggled at any time in-game.

The original Defiance didn't have its own soundtrack, relying on remixes or directly-pulled tracks from the previous games. Although I wish the remaster had its own unique soundtrack (I could understand if the resources weren't on hand), the remaster adds music from previous games where appropriate so as to avoid repetition of music across levels, avoid music-less cutscenes and making it so that the Spectral Realm isn't haunted by the same crying woman voice-line every 10 secs. There was one scene where the reuse of a certain track was so fitting that I got excited hearing it (Turel's boss encounter music long-ago cut from Soul Reaver 1).

I could see that the remaster had the difficult task of welcoming new players to the fifth backstory-heavy game in the series, but I believe it does the job well by providing a recap slideshow in the main menu, as well as brand new in-game contextual information.

The original in-game menu, which displayed attack moves, Reaver upgrades and level artifacts, has been replaced by a new ring menu reminiscent of Soul Reaver 1&2. In this new menu, you can also look at bios of main characters and enemies alike, THE ENTIRE BLOOMING HISTORY OF THE LORE, the unlockable concept art, the local maps (which look so good that they may as well be their own artworks), and brand new collectible skins.

The new skins themselves are a very welcome addition to the remaster. Each skin is unlocked when you collect a certain number of Arcane Tomes, so the original game's collectible placements are unaffected. Each skin has basis in either lore or concept art, and they all look incredible (I only bought the Deluxe edition so I cannot speak for the other pre-order skins).

It was also nice to explore the added Lost Levels and, through the Deluxe pre-order pack, it was exciting to finally play the cancelled sixth game The Dark Prophecy, even if it was a short demo.

If you are a newcomer and might be intimidated by all the pre-requisite catching-up to do, Blood Omen 1 is recapped enough and the events of Defiance will retroactively set-up Blood Omen 2, so I believe it is sufficient to play the SR1&2 Remasters as a prerequisite. For lifelong fans such as myself, this remaster is an incredible love-letter to the series and I cannot recommend it enough.

I hope the director and her team are able to work on Kain again in the future, whether for a hypothetical Blood Omen 1 and 2 Remastered or a new sixth mainline game. Like the Soul Reaver 1&2 Remasters before it, Legacy of Kain: Defiance Remastered was made with absolute love for the franchise and deep respect for the lore which will not be found anywhere else.

(This review will only look at the quality of the remaster rather than the inherent nature of the source games.)
It's been more than a year since my heart skipped a beat upon seeing the trailer for this remaster collection. After having this game for a year and indulging in my nostalgic glee, I can say with certainty that this is the best remaster collection I've ever played.

On top of the visual revamp, the remaster includes many quality of life features for Soul Reaver 1, such as a compass (which needed it more than SR2 did originally), a map with completion progress and vertical look, as well as restoring SR1's intended day-night cycle (optional) and having the lost alpha levels explorable as bonus content. Since the retail SR1 is around two thirds of the intended game, it is my hope one day that an expansion would be made that would restore the original game, and canonising its story as an aborted timeline (nudgenudgewinkwink).

Soul Reaver 2, aside from the graphical overhaul, remains largely untouched from how I remembered it on PS2. An added bonus of this remaster collection is the Photo Mode, which I've been using to take snaps of nostalgic locales, as well as bonus lore and behind-the-scenes content.

It is clear that this remaster was created with pure love for the series, being spearheaded by the series' most prolific fan (who also lead the Dreamcast retexture project) as well as being made by equally-enthused fans. This collection is a dream-come-true for me as a Kain fan and I wholeheartedly recommend this to both veteran fans and newcomers as the ultimate way to play the Soul Reaver games.

"DURRR DOOM 3 DOESN'T EXIST. 'WE' DON'T SPEAK OF DOOM 3. DOOM 3 NEVER HAPPENED." - idiots

Though I can understand why DOOM 3 can be considered a black sheep of the franchise, it is a fantastic game that definitely does not deserve to be ostracised. Hell, DOOM 2016 borrowed a load of aspects of this game.

I love DOOM 3's union of the slower, survival horror feel and classic DOOM gunplay (with reloading added in). I like the addition of employee emails and audio logs, which is reminiscent of System Shock 2 and gives character to the worldspace. The designs (and cinematic introductions) of the each enemy type are memorable.

What I do hate though is the overuse of item traps (which might have worked in DOOM 1 and 2 but doesn't work in the survival horror environment) and the game's moments of EEVVVILLLLLL that you roll your eyes at when it tries too hard at being scary. Despite being laughably over-the-top evil, I love the memorable character of Doctor Betruger, the memeable Anthony Hopkins-lookalike evil scientist who taunts you throughout the game.

I feel that DOOM 3 was the original vision for DOOM 1 and 2 but DOOM 2016 imitated what DOOM 1 and 2 ended up being.
I don't have the BFG Edition, but if you get the original DOOM 3, you can play mods and custom levels.

Morrowind: The game before Bethesda started to lose it.

I'll admit that my first TES game was Skyrim (I know some elitist nostalgiagoggle-wearing Morrowind fanboys will cry at me for this, but bear with me) however, already being a fan of old PC games, I got into it rather well.

Morrowind is a great RPG that gives you so much freedom over your character and the freedom to explore the diverse and very alien island of Vvardenfell. The game doesn't have an overly long introductory sequence before letting you loose, meaning it's easy to get started without the need of an alternate start mod.
Morrowind can be finicky at times and difficult to get into at first (eg. the dice-roll system being a main hindrance in early-game combat and the journal), but once you find the right merchants, skill trainers and equipment, the game becomes enjoyable, rewarding and bloody addictive. The technical aspects of the game were easy to get used to (at least for me).

My advice for first-time players: KEEP YOUR FIRST PLAYTHROUGH VANILLA AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. Ignore all those "HOW TO MAKE MORROWIND LOOK GOOD/PLAYABLE IN 2017" guides and just experience the gameplay and fantastic game world as is before modding it (besides, botoxing an old celebrity would just make them look ugly).
To improve functionality for modern systems, I recommend you install the Morrowind Code Patch and MGE XE (to enable widescreen support).

This game will leave you speechless. Not even my cynical mind could protect me from what this game throws at you.

Who'd've thought a game about a time-reversing hipster and her rebel-girl friend searching for the latter's missing friend while fearing for an impending storm could blow my mind more than BioShock Infinite?

I don't want to say much out of fear I might give stuff away, but I will say that the unique time-reversing mechanic is well-implemented and integrates well with the story, the characters are extremely likable (and those who you initially see as bawbags eventually grow on you), the friendship between the two main characters (Max and Chloe) is phenomenal, the game doesn't exploit its young female characters sexually, the voice acting is sublime, the writing is godlike, every big and small choice can build up throughout the whole game, there are great character dialogues and the puzzles are clever but not challenging enough to halt the course of the game.

Choose wisely.

Don't judge a book by it's cover and say it's a TF2 ripoff.
FF is a faithful remake of TF/TFC with HL2-like visuals (similar to how TFC used HL1's visuals).
As a TF2 fan, I really enjoyed playing this. FF is faster in pace and is good for those who love the classic Quake gameplay and only want the main Fortress gameplay without 20GB of storage usage. Though I will still play TF2 for fun, I play FF for challenge.

No hats, no miscs, no different weapons, no crafting, no trading, no Mann Co Store, no Premium accounts, no item qualities, etc
Just good ol' fasioned, blank slate Team Fortress.

Marvellous choice, if I do say so myself!
Many games today hold the player's hand throughout and have little to no consequences that affect the rest of the game.
Not this one. This game makes you think hard on your actions and if you make the wrong one, TOUGH LUCK. This challenging gameplay makes it very rewarding at the end and the different play styles add to the reply value.
Good story, great atmosphere. GO PLAY IT, YOU INSECT.

You know what, as of this writing, I am on my second playthrough and I have really enjoyed this game very much! Customisable skills and permanent decision making makes this game one of the one of the best I have ever played on PC. Also, the DX1 community is still at large so you can use some great fan favorite mods!
I got this in the summer sale for about a £1.24. The best £1.24 I have ever spent. I urge you to buy this game; I promise you won't be disappointed.
