Bit late as it's been delisted at this point but I couldn't exempt myself.

My first experience with System Shock 2 was in the Summer of 2004, one evening I said "Ok, let's give it a try" and before I realized I spent all night on it, and I had to force myself to remember I had other necessary things to do before running to play more. Since then, it's firmly been on my Top 5 games ever.

Sure, in retrospective it's clear that by the end of the game's development they were running on fumes - what is even that ending sequence - but the journey is amazing. Beside a few QOL details, the game has managed to age well because it had the luck to release at the right time, when the first-person control schemes we generally still use today had been just firmly established.

Even the visuals, despite being dated in comparison to even what was already out at the time, contribute to the atmosphere. Mods released over the years have always failed to understand that by making the enemies more detailed, they lose a lot, they work exactly because they are wonky and angular.

And of course, Shodan, you know she's going to appear sooner or later an yet the game still manages to deliver that greatly the first time you experience it.

In 2012 a mysterious benefactor by the nickname Le Corbeau released an amazing fan patch for SS2, apparently based on a source code of the game they obtained behind the desk; regardless, it revitalized the interest for the game by making it much more accessible to everyone, leading to it being finally rescued from the licensing hell and re-published - this very version has, in fact, the patch applied by default - and likely also causing the decision to remake the much more dated predecessor.

Unfortunately being delisted in favor of the more recent remaster means that for some time, it won't be accessible at very low prices like this version was several times. Not like that should stop you from getting a least one copy, as it's one of those games to have and revere.

Excellent game but the remastered version is not worth the current high price, perhaps in time when a steam key is available or a promotion where it is closer to £5.00 it will be worth it. It is not fair to delist this game and expect people to pay for it again when it is mainly a texture upgrade.
