Plenty of people ask why their game keeps crashing after subscribing to this mod. This thread is meant to present the solutions found by the community so that you don't have to dig through the forums for answers! This is a quite large mod, especially with the submods and the amount of other mods merged into this. With that said, instability is a problem especially for those with slower devices.

🔧Basic Fix and Setup
"Is Darthmod compatible?" "Is Radius compatible?" "Is Weistrass-" NO. It is NOT COMPATIBLE . Large overhauls will conflict with this one. This game has its own overhauls to everything, from units, to economy, to buildings, etc. Submods change the game even further, so stick with the 100% supported submods within the UEFC collection, attached to the main mod.

To those playing MP, it's plagued with desynchs and crashes. I myself have no idea how to fix it.
No work around just yet as far as I know. There's too much content to patch and account for mp just yet.

🧹 Clean Install: Removing Conflicting Mods
Mods like Darthmod, Radious, or LordHendra cheat mods may leave residual data that interferes with other mods.

Recommended steps:
  • Manually delete all Shogun 2 files.
  • Uninstall the game via Steam.
  • Unsubscribe from conflicting mods.
  • Reinstall the game fresh.
Obliterate the files so you may start anew. I've had Darthmod values stay even when I unticked the mod.

Setup
  1. Clear AppData
    • Go to: C:\Users\<YourUsername>\AppData\Roaming\The Creative Assembly\Shogun2
    • Delete everything inside that folder.
    • Also delete: TheCreativeAssembly\Launcher
      (This resets the launcher and may fix load order issues. It’ll be redownloaded when you launch the game.)
  2. Launch Shogun 2 normally.
    • Reorder your mods in the mod menu as needed.
    • The load order of the mods is the same order they are placed within the UEFC collection
    • PLEASE read the descriptions of any and all submods. Not every submod is compatible
      with one another, and some change the game heavily.
  3. Verify in-game settings
    • Check video memory and unit counts via game settings and custom battles.
    • Within setttings, at the bottom is a video memory counter
    • If said video memory counter is suspiciously low, game isn't utilizing it properly.
    • If values seem off, move on to the next section.

🛠️Optimization: File Editing
Is your video memory dirt low despite your expensive gaming rig? Have no access to ULTRA unit sizes? This part will allow you to fix that, and maybe give you more fps! This is also the most important part, as the lack of utilized video memory seems to be the cause of most crashes.

  1. Navigate to: C:\Users\<YourUsername>\AppData\Roaming\The Creative Assembly\Shogun2\scripts. It should have redownloaded after clearing.
  2. Open the preferences.script.txt file. This is where everything happens.
  3. Use Ctrl+F to find and edit these variables:

    | Variable |Default Value | Recommended |
    | "gfx_video_memory" |Default:0 | -2000 |
    | "number_of_threads" |Default:0 | Match CPU Core count |
    | "campaign_unit_multiplier" |Default:1.0 | 1.5 (optional) |

They will have a number next to them within the text file, followed by a semicolon (;).
ex: gfx_video_memory 0;
Set said number to the recommended.

Change gfx_video_memory to -2000 uncaps it, so the game can use more.

Changing number_of_threads improves multithreading and reduces single-core bottlenecks (although reportedly the game is meant to only use one core. It's just that it's said to improve performance overall for some). To find CPU core count, go to task manager (Ctrl+alt+Delete) and go to Performance>CPU>Cores (found at the bottom).

Changing campaign_unit_multiplier allows you to control the game's unit size modifier. Increasing it to 1.5x allows you to ignore the 1.5x submod, which also edits some other things that can destabilize your game. DO NOT CHANGE UNIT SIZES IN-GAME OR IT WILL REVERT. 1.5x may cause crashes so it may be best you keep the sizes at 1 and then set your ing-game settings to ULTRA unit sizes.

🚫 Submod Warnings!

  • Colorful Flags Submod: Known to cause crashes. Try disabling it if it bugs out for you.
  • Sandbox Submod: Makes everything crazy cheap, alters values. May cause crashes. Non-compatible with the More Fun Ships submod.
  • 1.5x Submod: May introduce buggy starting units. Instead use the campaign_unit_multiplier edit as said before.
  • Strongholds of the Samurai: Popular mod that adds new maps. High-end/ well performing devices can run it, but has reportedly caused CTDs for others. Use at own risk.

🐛 Known Crash Factors & Mod Behavior

Device specs: Lower-end systems may struggle with large-scale mods. UEFC has multiple, especially Expanded Japan, which was laggy on its own.

AI navy behavior: Fleets often refuse to merge, causing performance strain.

AI army behavior: Similar issue, but less severe due to unit caps.

✅ Final Checklist Before Launching

[x] Cleared AppData and launcher files

[x] Reordered mods in the menu

[x] Verified video memory and unit counts

[x] Edited preferences.script.txt for threads and memory

[x] Removed conflicting mods and reinstalled the game

[x] Disabled problematic submods

MP issue is mod related, thats all i can tell you, single player works with even the submod, however MP has a different issue, noticeably the black waiting for player mode. Whether its one of the submod or the main mod itself, unsure, some battles work, some doesnt. The weather submod however is a definite MP issue, causes the persistent wait queue and with the mod removed leads better results. (Could be graphical submod or a file correlating to the battle scenario)

Would have done more testing but i rather not, so if anyone else has MP issue they can pick up where i left off.

I followed the instructions since i kept having crashed whenever i was trying to find on the campaign map.
Now mods dont work period, no matter what mod i subscribe to on the workshop i dont see them in the launcher and can only play vanilla. I tried uninstalling reinstalling 3 times now :/

I have no idea why but consistently Kisho Ninja crash my game when they throw their bombs

@Thad I am changing Kisho ninja back to the default firebombs then. Multiple people have reported crashes.

@[BLOP] Krayt - no idea man, idk how this game has so many novel ways to break lol

Unfortunately, despite following this guide and getting help from some other Steam users, I am still getting frequent crashes when interacting with Portugal in the first dozen or so turns, no matter the faction I play, and the only potential issue I can see is that I am running Win11.

It's too bad because this mod is great, I don't think I've ever enjoyed Shogun II battles this much, but I'm not planning on changing OS for one mod. Hopefully someone will figure out what exactly it is with Win11 that is causing the crashes in the future.

Ok, so I didn't find the answer to my problem. The game just crashes when i end the turn and all bots do their move. After that it just throws me out to the desktop.

Can you tell me more about what you mean by it crashes "when interacting with Portugal"?

I had 2 campaigns going.

1st was Oda with the submmods suggested on the workshop page. On turn 27 I crashed every time i tried to continue. After a few tries I narrowed it down to a Portuguese ship that was approaching my coast, which would have revealed their faction to me.

2nd was Shimazu without the 1.5 units mod, and without the flag mod. I discovered Portugal very early on because of my start position, which was fine. On turn 17 they invaded me and I defeated them, which crashed my game every time. Manual battles and autoresolve. I think this had something to do with me killing their faction leader but I don't know for sure.

I just started a third campaign, as Chosokabe, this time with just the main mod and the unofficial patch installed. I'm on turn 51 and so far so good, but I haven't seen Portugal yet and I'm worried it will crash when i do.

I have all the DLC and did a fresh install before loading the mod.

Love the mod the only one real issue I've had is the game crashes when I try to manual battle with a reinforcing army. Regardless if I'm attacking or defending if I try to manually battle with another army coming in, unless it is npc controlled it will crash. Would really appreciate any help or suggestions.
