Im gonna brain dump stuff i notice / think of here for @ Frosty to review later.

So far this seems like DarthMod on crack and meth and steroids and HGH and testosterone which is very chefs kiss *mwah!*

*-*Playing Chosokabe and i can recruit both normal and Choso versions of the Kachi Samurai. They both have identical recruit and upkeep cost, but the generic Kachi are strictly worse (5 less accuracy and 15 less unit size).
Be good QoL to disable generic units for factions that have better uniques, from memory should be simple update to the Faction column in one of the unit tables (i used to remember all the table names off the top of my dome lol - im gettn old!)

Hey, I havent tested every faction and that is an oversight. Generally I have disabled the generics for units with the improved special versions, but in this case there was a pair of conflicting lines. Will be fixed. Please let me know any more of these you find!

I doubt if I'm the person meant to be tagged, but I do appreciate any more ideas for me to check. Still working on the Portugal guide, if you notice anything I can write about (especially units, currently writting about them but it takes a lot of time to look through them all), I'll gladly cook something up.
*-* Adjust unit models so their visual armor pieces match their armor values. Controlled by adding/removing model names to each of the units body parts. ATM kumi units with 1-2 armor visually look the same as professional ashigaru with 5-8 armor, and samurai with 8 armor look the same as units with 14 armor.

Purely a nice to have mind you, but it is very nice to have :D
Oh sorry guys I derped out, got mixed up and thought i saw the Dev tag next to Frosty! Honestly you and Lenny Froggnins dont look the same to me!
*-* Spear Expertise research provides +0 levels to spear recruits. Should be +1.
*-* Sword Expertise also research provides a mere +0 levels to spear recruits. Should be +1.
*-* Way of Sword and Way of Spear also provide a whopping +0 levels to spear recruits. Should be +1.
*-* Kenshi (Katana) samurai and the katana ashigaru seem out of place. The change to Yumi Sam/cav turning them into hybrid ranged/melee is great!
Theme wise the ♥♥♥♥ back then focused on range over all else, bow/gun, then polearm, and THEN sword as a last resort back up, so the Kachi hybrid IMO is a bloody great change.

I would remove dedicated katana Sam and Ashu completely.
That 'heavy infantry' role is already filled by the Naginata units. Only change to the Nag unit I think is good for now would be to jack their armor up so they are back to being best in class.

Swords for old japanese should always, always be a last resort. The reason untrained peasants get given a long stick with a knife on the end is cos they can kill someone with a sword before they can get in range. This should be especially respected with elite troops.

Re: recruitment ranks. I know, I made the conscious decision to make battlefield veterancy the most important thing. Stacking all the bonuses would lead to recruiting rank 5+ troops, at which point why even bother balancing for rank 0 since there wont be any rank 0 on the field most of the time? This way when you see that red O, you know that unit has seen some ♥♥♥♥.

I would remove the Sword units entirely for the reasons you've said (I agree completely), but the level of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ I would get from the community would be off the charts so I left em in. Besides, what do I do with the sword building chain then? Rename it and have it be the Nagamaki samurai?

Oh and armor: thats a cool idea. I loved the visual armor changes in Medieval 2. I know how to do it...I'll keep it in mind. The easiest way to do the higher armor samurai would be to give them the giant shoulder pads/shields. Then Professional Ashigaru could have the same armor as the 8 armor samurai, but with the Ashigaru hat.

I took your advice and added in the shoulder shields for units with over 10 armor.
*-* Fire Bombers (with the slings) and Fire Arrow, and the Mangonel have 1 turn recruitment time. These should be longer.

*-* Generals exp gain is much too fast, im at turn 41 and for the last 20 turns or so ive only seen AI generals that are either max level or 2 star because theyve just been created - bugger all in between. Most of my generals are likewise topped out, only having to do 6-7 battles each I think. Not much.
I would probably triple exp requirements, maybe even quadruple. Both for the game play loop to extend it out and make powerful generals more valuable (harder to get, so you will value them more) and thematically with the 12 TPY change it seems odd for a 23 year old guy to become a 6 star general within a single year LOL :D

re: unit armor there are a bunch of unarmored parts kicking around that would be good to add onto low armor units (robes and bare heads, headbands, some of the stuff bandits/pirates wear) and remove/make rarer the metal triangle hat (there may be a straw version to replace with too) and remove the armored chest plates from the roster.
*-* Haiya Taiho cannon also 1 turn recruitment.

*-* Pro Ashi Teppo are 2 turns to recruit while samurai equivalent take 1....I may be missing somthing with building bonuses perhaps? Player error?

I am probably not changing the visuals any more, I just thought adding the shoulder shields was a cool idea.

You may be missing something with the building bonuses AND technology bonuses to recruitment time. However, Professional Teppo Ashigaru were not properly keyed into the recruit time mechanic. That will be fixed in a coming update.

Im considering changing the generals, but I've been really enjoying my current campaign (turn 107).

*-* Tanegashima (heavy gunners), and the hero variant have shorter range (175) than normal teppo units (200-210).
