Oradano Mincho is a fantastic font choice, I second that user's opinion. They remind me personally of old timey typewriters and old newpapers that my grandfather had, which is great.

Above is a link to a copy of "永田氏改正暗射地球譯圖" This is a world map commissioned by a member of the Nagata clan in 1875 Meiji Japan with geographical (both land and sea) names in proper corresponding Kanji at the time. The way the characters are written on this map is exactly how my brain pictures how a world map would look like in Victorian China/Victorian Japan, I recommend comparing and contrasting fonts at your disposal with this map's font, as there might be a even better font than Oradano Mincho, though for now OM is definitely superior to SimSum as its replacement.
most of the characters you use for the oceans an seas names are fine, though I'd like to point out that according to this map, the Pacific Ocean was called "大平洋" back then, not "太平洋", where the first character differs.
the "度" in Indian Ocean "印度洋" was also written in an archaic form where one horizontal line in the middle of the character extends beyond the two vertical lines. I cannot find this archaic form anywhere on the internet, so using the modern "度" should be acceptable imo.
Lastly, as a reassurance, your choice to write the names either in a top - down or right - left format is correct and historically authentic, keep doing that in your revisions.
Thank you so much for this help, this is exactly the kind of thing I needed! I'll get to work on revising the map with these changes soon for sure. Thanks again.
