Does this still work on 1.8.x? When I play on the new update it takes forever to boot in. Don't know if it's another mod or this one (the launcher says this is the only mod that's unsupported on the new update).

@hlin Simplification of Kanji, or Shinjitai was barely a thing until 1946, and 1946 doesn't sound very *Victorian* to me. Most simplified characters have already appeared in ancient books as vulgar characters. And definitely it is not a communist-only thing after 1949. Before that, the Kuomintang (Nationalist Party) planned to implement simplified Chinese characters, but Kuomintang failed in the civil war and retreated to Taiwan in disgrace, so Kuomintang reluctantly left this grand task to the Communists, claiming later that the simplification of Chinese characters they planned but failed to implement destroyed Chinese culture.

While I figure out the corrections for the characters themselves, I'm pleased to say I've at least updated the font of the ocean labels now. Thanks for the feedback, I really like how the Oradano Mincho font looks and I can see how SimSun looked a bit Times New Roman-y now!

I am already working on changing the font to a better one, however I must admit I'm going to struggle with the actual characters. Where possible I tried to copy the characters from historical reference maps, but often these were too low resolution for me to make out, forcing me to simply find the modern day names for these seas. And to top it all off, I can't actually read either Japanese or Chinese so I really was fully at the mercy of my low resolution reference maps.

That said, I still would very much like to pursue authenticity, and I would really welcome any help with this. If anyone can provide me with more accurate Japanese characters/names for each of the seas in question, it would be a huge help. Feel free to reply here, or in this discussion I've created .

please swap out the font for the ocean names. I am Chinese, and those fonts are the equivalent to something like times new roman or ariel in English, it's very unfitting for artistic purposes. They also shouldn't be in simplified Chinese, Japanese Kanji has not undergone simplification processes during the Victorian time period. Otherwise, everything else look quite good!

Why the map uses simplified chinese characters? Making it looks weird. The simp chinese characters were created not until 1960s, by communist china. In 19th century, they should use traditional chinese characters.

@月見里タカユキ I'm glad you like it. Good spot and valid point. I've taken a look at those two suggestions and I do actually like the look of Oradano Mincho more too, so if/when I next update this, I'll see about changing all the text on the map to that font instead. Thank you for the suggestion!

Very nice. However, I have a suggestion regarding the font for Kanji. Currently, the mod uses SimSun, which is a font for modern simplified Chinese. This is not quite suitable for a mod that emphasizes historical immersion and is Japan-themed. My suggestion is to use KingHwa_OldSong or Oradano Mincho. Both are digital free fonts based on historical movable type.

I think the overlay part can use Ink wash painting and Shan shui as the art style (I am a native Chinese speaker, not sure about the correct name in English, but I am sure Japan also has similar art styles)
