I have a multi purpose CV that I use to move my drill miner SV. I'm trying to figure out where to upgrade from here mining wise. I'm a new player.
I humbly disagree. I mine with my Carrier / Mobile Base / Mining CV all the time. It comes down to how to design it.
Personally I think SV miners (with lasers) aren't worth it early on. Unless you really feel you need one to create a CV, just skip it.
I usually spawn in a Juno HV at the start, add some drills to it and a cpu, then straight to CV, then add some mining lasers to the CV, then spawn in my CV that is a carrier / mobile base / mining ship. (moving the lasers from the first CV over to the Carrier / Mobile Base / Mining vessel)
I do build an SV miner with laser drills in my play through about early to midway through just to mine Silver ore, Magmacite and other resources you can only mine off a planet surface.
