Did you sell all your units and buildings on an imminent attack (= popup shown "Begin / Auto-Resolve") on defense of one of your own worlds before? If yes, this is the cause. The following battle then always auto-resolve.

I don’t recall doing that but under the assumption I did is there anyway to fix it?

If you already sold everything and hit autoresolve, I don’t think there is a way to avoid the next battle being auto resolved. However, it only happens on the very next battle. So if you can cause the next battle to be a low stakes battle you don’t care about, that would be a bit of a solution. For future cases, if you do sell everything before a battle starts, just don’t hit autoresolve. You can hit begin to start the battle normally. It still won’t start the battle if you sold everything, but the next battle won’t autoresolve.

i have noticed that when i attack black sun empire there's a 50/50 chance that it auto resolves. getting really annoying taking massive casualties in early game because they have fighters
