Just a 2025 Update, this mod does not work. I went to configure the settings just like recommended and it didn't reset my character to level 1.. repeatedly. Don't waste your storage space with this.

@elunder Great mod. ARK would be boring without him.

The mod is still working. Errors very rarely occur - a character gets stuck at a certain level or the level does not reset after death. It is cured by repeated death of the character.

Do you need to restart your savefile or something? I downloaded the mod, disabled hardcore mode. I died, respawned but respawned on the same level as I died.

Or did the mod stop working?

I love the idea of this mod. Hardcore for me was enjoyable because of the threat of death wiping days of experience, but I didn't understand why I had to take with that the full character wipe. Very appreciative of Elunder for taking the opportunity to make a better hardcore ARK, and hoping they come back to support it. Experiencing some bugs in singleplayer where exp won't reset, can't pin down the situations where it occurs. Playing on the Island, SP, with the following changed default settings:

ExperienceLeftFactor=0.0
ReduceLevel=0
RecoverableExperienceFactor=0.0
TokenCount=0
CorpseTokenCount=0
BuffDurationBase=0.0
BuffDurationLevelBase=0.0
BuffDurationLevelFactor=0.0
BuffExperienceFactor=0.0

I noticed that dying with unspent levels, the mod wouldn't reset my level, or granted a ton of unspent stats for level ups + engrams upon death.

Again, so appreciative Elunder took the opportunity to make what Wildcard wouldn't, and hoping they return to continue the bugfixing operation.

This mod is great.

The standard game is either no xp penalty or character deletion on death. This provides a middle ground to those extremes that can be tailored to the player's liking. Furthermore the game is just too bug infested for a hardcore playthrough to be viable. Loss of levels is much more appropriate for a game with years-long bugs that can kill players through no fault of their own.

I'm pretty sure this MOD has been abandoned, but it still allows to you 'DIE" and keep your tribe/base/dinos etc. And that's all i need from it anyway, yes you lose all or most of your levels, but they don't call it HARDCORE for nothing.

I had a rather large bug that happened. I downloaded it and the configuration that appeared in my file was different; it doesnt have playerdamage value, reducelevel value, nor does it have any of the messeges depicted up there... so I did what a dumb person does and thought that maybe if i copied and pasted what was in the description in there it would work? yeah.... well. I set expirenceleft, and recoverableexpirence to 1.0, and put the added Reducelevel to 1. then i tried to test it and nothing happened. oh well, we didn't mind.

Later me and my friend were killed and lost 20 levels. Now I wanted a bit of a challenge; but that... that was way more than we were looking for... so uh how can we get this to work properly? I just wanted to reduce our levels by one or two each time we die- not that.

Hi! I would like to thank you for making this mod, it is exactly what I was looking for because I wanted a way to set a less severe punishment for death while it still being noticable, and this lets me do it perfectly

However I feel it needs just a quick thing to be more clear what it's about.
My understanding of what it does is that it adds.
The option to reduce your total EXP by a percentage of what you have: default, set to 10%
The option to reduce your current level progress
The option to reduce your level by a number of levels
Along side this it adds interesting ways to regain some of the lost EXP.
First is the option to add a buff that automatically applies to everyone who dies that increases the rate of EXP.
Second is a token system; upon death you get some tokens that can be used to grant bonus EXP, your corpse will also be equipped with a few. Just a few things to make it easier to understand

Any one confirm the mod is fully functional? Seems i can make alliances anymore either, been messing with setting and other mods trying to see whats causing it.

For some reason the xp notes stopped working and the notifications are not going off any more, anyone else having these issues? Love the mod thank you for it!

ahh ok just an idea. how about progressive? 1st death 20 % 2nd 50, 3rd 75 4th 100 and 100 any after that?

I dont think it is possible to perform a permanent death via script when in softcore.

Q/Suggestion. Can you add an ini option to limit # of deaths till permanant? For instance if I want to allow 3 deaths then perm meaning you'd the nhave to create a new chara as in hard core?

Message durations are in! No clue why the ResetMessage is not showing for you Bl4ckSkull666, I just tested it again and it works for me.

@elunder , i have test it now again incl. set a DeathMessage. The DeathMessage will be displayed on die, but the ResetMessage will not be displayed on respawn.

It should be displayed upon respawn and uses the same tech as the death message. They either both work or throw. I am working on the message duration. I am also adding a timer for the playerDamageOnly option which will ensure that players that commit suicide in a fight will be reset.

Thank you @elunder, now it work's. But the configurable message "ResetMessage" will be not displayed on me. I have set one but not displayed anywhere.

Due to the large amount of configuration options, I am not able to test every configuration. It seems the ones I tested did not represent the rest well enough. I am much more confident now!

Oh okay , that must be by copy paste it on begin, but 0.0 don't work too and i don't get the messages on death, on respawn. no one of the message will be displayed too all times....

@Bl4ckSkull666 Please set the ExperienceLeftFactor to something less then 1.0 as it denothes the percentage of experience left after death. 1.0 = 100%

@elunder I have copy now the server, delete all mods from configuration without this mod and have start it as second server. And nothing happend again on death/respawn... it will be not work for me on dedicated server.. I don't use one click hoster. It's run on a dedicaed windows server..

@elunder it's loaded by client , so it must loaded by the server. But nothing happend on death and/or respawn. I have test it on Single player mode too without other mods. Nothing happends too. On server load it's happend no errors and nothing.

Anything is wrong. After reconfiguration and not work again. I have delete my configuration from GameUserSettings.ini and remove Mod and the file too. After server start again the mod is installed but no configuration in ini file... What's wrong there? No errors on load but mod don't work on me ( Dedicated Server / map Ragnarok )

"ExperienceLeftFactor=1.0" means that you keep all experience. If you want to lose all use "ExperienceLeftFactor=0.0"!

@David Webb I did not include loosing a percentage of levels. Use this configuration to lose 50% of all experience:

@DrExplorerMP Will do. I found anouther bug with token replication, currently the tokens become useless when taken from the initial inventory when using non-dedicated servers. Working on it.
