Orion and NERVA drives are 1960 and 1970s projects that were completely abandoned before the 80s. The X-Ray laser was proposed for SDI but never worked/tested and exofighters (another 1960s concept) were sent to the trash when the Space Shuttle was developed in the 1970s.

Haven't tried it yet (I use 0.4106) but I wonder about some stuff. In early 1980s, the space programs of both superpowers were far more roboust and advanced (strategicaly if not technologicaly) than today. Things like Orion Drive, nuclear powered X-Ray Lasers or NERVA concepst, exofighters were far better conceptualised than today, as they were shelved and forgotten in early 1990s. So it would be cool if some of the space programs were more available to research in the beggining of the scenario. But it would probably need some overhaul of the tech tree.

Matvprok Its a randomly generated name from the base game namefiles, not related to the mod. names are generated anglacized (meaning stuff like you dont do feminine variations you pick one for both genders) All the nationalities in the base game generate with anglicized names.

No, I'm not planning on doing other timelines. There's still a lot of work missing to make this a proper alternative scenario and I'd rather focus on that.

I don't have TI currently installed so it might take a while to upgrade it to 0.4.90, you'll need to use 0.4.78 to keep using it meanwhile.

Individual nations can be recolored but it would require changing more nation than just the USSR colors to avoid color repetition.

I have some other mods, so I'm not sure which of these has an effect, but:

Republic of the Southern Cross: Australia eats New Zealand

Greater Indonesia leads to greater austronesia. Indonesia can absorb AUS/NZ/Pacific Island Microstates.

South East Asian Alliance: Thailand can absorb Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, and the Philipines

Pan-Asian combine can eat SEAA

Soviet Union can eat Pan-Asian Combine, US, EU

African Union: Ethiopia eats Africa

Caliphate -> Greater Caliphate -> House of Islam can eat the entire middle east, Afghanistan, and Ethiopia

Only place I couldn't really blob out of existence was South American Union. Would be nice to see a Unification tech allowing a combination of USNA/SAU.

I can generally reduce the map to a few super-states. Soviet Union or Western Alliance, South America, Caliphate, Greater India

Loving the mod so far. As an aside will you consider doing other start dates? I can see a lot of potential for a 60s Mid-Cold War start that feeds in with the Space Race or an Early Cold War 1947 start beginning with the Roswell Incident.

So played through a few times, seems like the communists can create the biggest super state. Ultimately the most consolidated I can get it is all of north america, Europe, African Union, Soviet Union & China, Korea, indochina merged. What I can't figure out is if I can annex the caliphate area, South America, South Seas republic, and Thailand, India, and like micronesia. Any advice on a way to do that?

Sometimes these conversations (and plans) might became outdated. I want to add techs, and I've been making a list of what I consider/remember to be the relevant ones of the 80/90s, but I haven't made my mind on what I want to do, yet.

Ah I see, I misunderstood the conversation below, For some reason I thought there were already new technologies in the tech tree and thought you were just against expanding the technology tree except for a few specific technologies, apologies :steamfacepalm:

As I said below, depends on the technologies that you want to add. For instance, the Internet dates back from the 70s but the World Wide Web was invented in 1989 so that would be fine as a technology, since that made a huge impact.

The same way 2G/3G technology in the 1990s made cellular phones available to everyone and allowed them to connect to the internet, which was a game changer. Or the lithium Ion batteries that powered the phones and a ton of other things, like attack submarines, tactical radios, electric cars, etc.

But since then... what's the innovation of 4G and beyond? Or social media? Or electric scooters/bikes? A lot of those things are sold as 'game changers' but they're just replicating existing processes and combining them in a different matter.

Plus, there are 30 years of difference between 1983 and 2013 (in game terms 2013 would be equivalment to the late game) and things definitely wouldn't evolve the same way if the aliens landed on 1983.

I love the mod, but do you really think adding more technologies wouldn't make sense? I mean obviously scientific discovery would be drastically altered by the arrival, but just because something existed already doesn't mean we had anywhere near the same capacity we do now, Hubble hasn't launched till 1990, Webb till 2004 (Half the space bodies present in game weren't even discovered until then and you can just research deep system skywatch like its 2024?), the strongest computer in 1984 had the computing power of 800 MFLOPS, today that figure is 5 billion times higher. New technologies don't have to be brand new never before seen things, it can be concepts like the other person mentioned - minituarization, data compression, social networking.

Or perhaps you think that adding more technologies doesn't make sense as the technology tree heavily depends on the alien arrival, and you would rather express the 40 year progress difference in the state of countries in the game?

I've uploaded a new version (now the fleets properly show the new factions logos) and I couldn't see any of the issues you mentioned so that must have fixed them, But please do test and let me know if everything is working fine for you.

It must be missing the new region that was added in the experimental version, hence the error message. I will eventually update to 0.4.50+ but I am waiting to see if it gets pushed first to beta-release status because of possible bugs.
