The higher your vantage the easier a spill is to spot (especially when the map marker goes away but the spill doesn't), so it'd be nice to be able to scout out and locate a spill from the air, then call the ship right to it.
Assuming you ever revisit the ship of course.

I noticed as well that the port/starboard ballast tanks didn't seem to work.
Turned out: the liquid meters were just missing, probably worked fine.
