Low poly models, once the normalmap is baked, should remain unchained unless you wish to bake again. This is because the normalmap was baked for that specific geometry and it's existing surface normals. Changing anything from that point will create artifacts.
We create a high poly model in the first place to simulate geometry on cheaper models. How we bake it can in turn cause the low poly look horrendus without the normalmap applied; but much, much cheaper to render.
One glance at your screenshots shows you aren't using any normalmaps. I can assume this is the result of that 2 year old tutorial Cyborgmatt created. It is in fact the worst tutorial out there.
As a workshop creator, you should be aware about the fact that Dota 2 models are incredibly low in quality (as opposed to models from other Valve titles) and cause many unwanted deformities when posing. The model was directed at SFM users who wish to make posters (so are most other Dota 2 workshop items, as there are no rigs built for each hero). Materials and textures remain mostly unchanged (I never called it an HD model)
Finally, yes I have an idea what I'm doing
