Losing your mod files that you worked so hard to make is one of the worst feelings. It's happened to me before and it sucks.
Though I think you could've gotten away with uploading it to the steam workshop. I remember some guy uploaded a Sabaton music pack to the workshop last year, and nothing bad came of that. I could be wrong, but I think as long as you don't stand to profit from the mod then there wouldn't be a problem publishing it.
I also made a Rage Against the Machine music pack that I lost at the same time (wasn't planning on uploading it because copyright), it's that which I'm truly salty for :(
