It can be helpful if you're using an animated normal map, other than that it's pretty useless though

Yep, you can also put the alpha over the diffuse texture instead if you prefer that, but you'll need another vmt command if you wanna do that

I've found that the best settings to use are phongboost set to 1, exponent set to 50, and the mask set added to the normal map alpha. It ends up looking really similar to the ingame shaders, and is what i'm using for my own ports.

You can also find a blender shader on the valve developer wiki that really helps with getting the settings, since it has replicas of all the main vmt settings.

That's not gloss, that's a mask that lowers the specular level, the in-game shaders have a seperate slider for gloss.
Plus sfm already has native support for the specular mask, you just need to add it to the alpha channel of the normal map.

The only textures that are used in the game are a diffuse, normal map, and specular mask, none of those are PBR textures.
Adding the effect honestly just sounds like a waste of time for the ports.
