It can be helpful if you're using an animated normal map, other than that it's pretty useless though

Yep, you can also put the alpha over the diffuse texture instead if you prefer that, but you'll need another vmt command if you wanna do that

put the alpha channel of the specular textures in alpha of normal

phongboost 1?

I've found that the best settings to use are phongboost set to 1, exponent set to 50, and the mask set added to the normal map alpha. It ends up looking really similar to the ingame shaders, and is what i'm using for my own ports.

You can also find a blender shader on the valve developer wiki that really helps with getting the settings, since it has replicas of all the main vmt settings.

i havent been able to find a good vmt for specular maps anyway
