I once used a piston with a connector and it was a disaster ;-;

Another option for the landing pad connector, if you play with mods, would be to use the flat connector mod or any mod with a full cube connector to sink it in the floor. This method would be used more on the users end instead of the main blueprint though.

If you put the connector on a hinge you can put it away if you want to land something flat on that pad. The trick is to lock the hinge before attaching a ship else it'll buck like a mechanical bull. I've set the lower and upper limits to be the same to "lock" the hinge. But I suspect you can just use the "lock" button. I have a large grid mobile refinery in my workshop that uses the concept if you are interested.
