The order for the boat was awarded to the Germania shipyard in Kiel on May 30, 1938. The keel was laid on September 16, 1939, the launching on August 1, 1940, the commissioning under Lieutenant Heinrich Lehmann-Willenbrock finally took place on September 14, 1940. Up to and including the 7th company, the chief engineer was Friedrich Grade.
After its commissioning on August 10, 1940 until March 31, 1943, the boat was used as a training and front-line boat for the 7th U-Flotilla, first in Kiel and then in St. Nazaire. After its active service as a front boat, it came from April 1, 1943 to June 30, 1944 as a training boat for the 24th U-Flotilla in Memel, and finally it came from July 1, 1944 to its decommissioning on February 15, 1945 as a school boat to the 22nd U-Flotilla to Gotenhafen or Wilhelmshaven, where it was destroyed by an air raid on March 30, 1945.
During its service, U 96 had eleven sorties in which 29 ships with 178,651 GRT were sunk and four ships with 33,000 GRT were damaged. At least 1179 people were killed. It was decommissioned in Wilhelmshaven on February 15, 1945 and destroyed in an air raid on March 30 without anyone on board.
