I think you could use this to turn the merchant face into a decal and have them all stack, it makes it so stackable objects can have decals visible

Can you make the merchants bags instead of non-interacting tokens? It would make it a lot easier to move your merchant around. The assistants would still be the tokens and just be in the merchant bag.
