In addition to the information provided by @SireDragonChester,
If you are using mod trucks, it will not always work because modders often make modifications to the exhausts.
I will not support modded vehicles because I would need to hack the mod to collect the information, and I will not do that, sorry.
A) mod conflict or B) bad download or C) have too high or low in mod priority. Un Sub, restart windows then resub. See if that fix it.
Yes, it needs to be DirectX11. If you start in OpenGL mode, the smoke will look strange, like in Minecraft.
Links are in the description of this mod.
They need to have higher priority than this mod to apply the change.
The smoke is applied directly to the exhaust pipes. I use an original feature from the game map. I tried to implement the feature you mentioned, but I can't cut the smoke with the engine off, and I can't change the smoke volume according to the trucks' acceleration or gear changes.
The mod presented is the best I can do.
I'm sorry if it doesn't meet your expectations.
If you are using mod trucks, it will not always work because modders often make modifications to the exhausts.
If you are using other mods and the truck has been tested and the exhaust is original, I suggest placing my mod higher in the priority list (higher up in the mod list). I hope this helps.
In this case I still need to hack the mod, collect information and create the condition of smoke in the exhausts, this is inappropriate in my point of view, the creator of the mod has the copyright of his work, he must have made many adaptations to make it work in the game, I suggest asking the modder to add exhausts with smoke.
is it possible to make a smoke mod for modded trucks/non original trucks? For example the K100E or the FLB? Would be greatly appreciated!
It says in the description, “This mod continuously adds smoke to the exhausts...”.
If it doesn't meet your expectations, I suggest you don't use it.
I've just retested and it's working normally on the current version of the game 1.55*
If you're using other mods, put mine at the top of the list.
If you're using vehicle mods, 99% of them won't work, support only for original vehicles in the game.
The smoke will always be activated, whether the truck is on or off.

I like the smoke the way I created it.
The way it's applied to the exhausts, it's not possible to add shade.
I don't know how to make it react to the wind. The smoke moves as the vehicle moves.
Sorry if it doesn't suit you.

If any other mod touches the same files that I modify you should put my mod higher up in the list of mods, this will give my mod higher priority and the smoke should appear on the exhaust of the original trucks in the game.

I suggest testing only with this mod, other mods may be affecting your game experience.
Which version of the game are you testing with?
Maybe looking at the exhaust code for the T-Series in BeamNG Drive would give you a better idea on how to implement that in ATS.
I'm not asking you to do something you aren't all that familiar with, more a suggestion of trying something with an actual reference that ATS doesn't have in coding that another source has, and could potentially give you an idea how to improve what you currently have.
