It was more of a comment about the term scalemail, which isn't a proper historical term as I understand it. There are a variety of scale armours like lamellar armour and maile which is chaimail as we know it. In my limited research into this, which I did to come up with some balanced stats for it as opposed to chainmail, the first thing I found was a lengthy discussions about how scalemail isn't real. I don't really care either way and I like the way scalemail rolls of the tongue.

Wee armor chat. Scalemail is a real thing! As Saro posted, but it's more commonly known as lamellar armor.

Technically, mail means armor. Pop culture has gotten most people to associate mail with chain mail, but it's not inaccurate to use it for other armor types. Armor aficionados refer to armor as harnesses (e.g. plate harness). The only D&D-style armor that doesn't exist is studded leather, it's actually brigandine, splinted armor, or a coat of plates depending on it's configuration and from what time period and where it originated.
