Lighting Overhaul

honestly its always annoying when games with a human character have chromatic aberration, its a defect in optics caused by lenses not bending all light wavelengths equally resulting in them not getting to the same focal plane, safe to say eyes are normally not supposed to experience this or lens flare for that matter.

One more question, is there a way to edit the falloff your suit spotlights? I don't really like how the light just suddenly stops lighting things up, I've tried editing the fall off setting but that doesn't seem to have the same effect as changing the falloff setting on the lights

Also, I don't know why but whenever I try copy pasting the steam mod to my local mods folder I get "9 critical errors" and the mod simply doesn't work. The steam mod works just fine but I get errors from using the copied version so idk what could be happening, although I did rename it from the string of numbers it was before

Does this mod improve stuff if I have an RTX card?
Hmmmmmmm. Thanks for breakdown of the code in the sbc file. Unlike, apparently, most Space Engineers, I prefer to be able to see wtf I'm doing at night, so have been fiddling around with ways to make the game brighter at night with a custom skybox (it is plenty bright with default skybox, but I quickly learned the Milky Way skybox makes ♥♥♥♥ a lot darker). Using a brighter, more colorful custom skybox helps... But maybe now I can faithfully recreate my model of our solar system with the MilkyWay skybox and still have night vision. We'll see. Thanks.

2022 and Mod still live!
Having an issue where shadow are 2 dark.
What should I change in Environment.sbc to make it brighter?
Also nub questions ummm can I use console to change values while server is on?

just started using this and i love it great work keep it up do you have any other mods if so would be interested in checking them out as well
@HybridZach This mod hasn't been updated since Dec 18, so expect there to be some issues. Does the game become black even outside under the sun or inside an atmosphere during the day? Caves becoming pitch black is intended.
When I load this mod my games basically pitch black?, I have a lot of issues with the lighting in this game, its either too bright or too dark in some places, and when I go into a cave but its light outside it goes almost pitch black. Same as when I go into a cryo chamber during the day time :( the lighting in this game is a real pet peeve.

This is now a must have mod on any new world. Love it.
I'm afraid this problem cannot be solved using my mod. This is a well known issue, but apparently none of the devs give a flying damn about it.

What I mean by that is whenever I'm seated in a cockpit with all side but the front covered up everything outside the cockpit would turn pitch black if viewed from 1stPerson
@Λlyx's Van: Why can't you see? Too bright? I would encourage you screw around with the values and see what works best for you. Obviously some values are linked to others so it takes some time to gain an understanding of what each value does exactly, but I think my description should give you some basic pointers. You pretty much can't break anything here, so go nuts.

This might be an old question:
If I were to set the timeout timer for the "eye adaptation" feature to an obscenely high value, it would theoretically results in the feature take into effect, yes?
Would that be a good idea? Because I'm very much annoyed by that feature because I can't see anything in 1stPerson while seated in a covered-cockpit (exposed front)
Anarch Cassius 2020
Mostly.

The Skybox mod needs to be above this one (might be reversed for dedicated server). This lets the Skybox take precedence BUT if the Skybox mod has lighting changes of its own they will override.

Here it is with Realistic Skybox vs Colorful Nebula. The Nebula has its ambient light settings take precedence but other lighting settings from this mod still apply.

So, mostly, depending on the Skybox mod and what you want. The above holds true for most lighting/skybox mod combos.
The Roach 2020
Can this be mixed with ones that change the skybox? like have both mods active in a world.
Anarch Cassius 2020
Depends what you mean, it makes shadows darker and mostly eliminates the unrealistic adjustments to their darkness as you move through them. It doesn't completely eliminate the light spread issues but it makes areas look fully dark even before you enter them.

I had some issues with it in the past but right now this mod is working better for this purpose than any of the newer ones I've tried.
Anything in this mod affect the light leaking through blocks?
Any of those settings affect that? This problem has been around since 2015 as far as I can tell and I still have lights bleeding through blocks.
@Festive Mints I honestly have no idea. Would think so.
Festive Mints 2020
does this work for version 1.193.103?
@swordfish, unfortunately you don't get that much fine control over the lighting to make such things possible. Nights are the same brightness, whether the moon is there or not, so I opted for darker nights, since the moon won't be there more often than not... Feel free to tinker around with the settings, though.
@swordfish just give it a try. You won't be disappointed.
This makes brightness and darkness playable, THANK YOU
HKGT Giocovier 2019
Thanks for the envskybox settings explanation, the ambient blue glow has been driving me mad.
Enyalos 2019
BTW i've noticed this yesterday but forgot to mention i believe the problem isn't on the mod its the veteran suit or at least i've noticed this on other mods and vanilla. my bad
Enyalos 2019
ya. its odd to explain. simply put there's no shadow casting on the engineer. light or dark the player seems to stay bright against the background of the environment in third person i dont remember if the first person hands where affected.
@Enyalos I'll check it out, I haven't played the game in a while. What exactly do you mean with "the engineer stays lit up"? Like in third person of something?
Enyalos 2019
hay. quick mention here has anyone noticed that in the new update with this mod the engineer seems to stay lit up even in pitch black shadows.(or at least on a previous save before the update)
Oh. And ACTUAL eye adaptation is very subtle in this game anyway and really only noticeable if you really look for it. You won't be able to see in a non lit room, but you will notice the feature when standing on the moon and looking into the skybox then back on the lit ground. Adjusting the values didn't really do much for me, but I did put a little tutorial in the description describing how one could change some values themself. If you find a set that works better for you or seems more realistic do let me know 👍
It's not completely disabled, it's just that the lighting takes way longer to adjust to the atmosphere's exposure. I did that so that the lighting wouldn't be all over the place. In vanilla SE, when you step out into the atmosphere or back into a dark room the lighting kicks in almost instantly which looks really bad. You will notice it when going into a dark room or cave. The walls will be slightly visible upon entering. It will take about 20 seconds to actually become dark. This way it wouldn't constantly change. And of course the change itself isn't as big as in vanilla because I wanted it to be as unnoticeable as possible.
Well, it seems like adaption is disabled with this skybox as stepping into the shadows remains pitch black for me even if the room has ample windows. It's kinda too bad, because this mod looks amazing in space and on the moon, but not on planets. I ended up going with one of the SixDice ones. :lunar2019deadpanpig:

I wish I had the best of both, but I don't know how to mod such things, and I have other things I'd rather do with my time than messing around with it. If you get it sorted out, that'd be awesome, as I like everything else about this mod more than the SixDice ones.
@Goatroach unfortunately I can only work with what the game gives me. The reason the shadows are so dark is that the game illuminates your surroundings according to how much you are "exposed" to an atmosphere's glow. Meaning if you can see the atmosphere, whether it be from the inside or the outside, everything would be bright, even with no light source present. If you then covered the planet's atmosphere by a single block, then everything would darken down. This is exactly the reason that everything is so bright when outside and you can easily see into non lit spaces from the outside, but as soon as you walked in, everything would suddenly becone extremely dark. This is what I believed to be the inverted eye adaptation feature. It's caused by allowing the atmosphere.
I like the way the lighting looks in space; very realistic, but the shadows on planets are waaaay too dark in broad daylight. Any way of increasing ambient lighting on planets, or implementing some level of reflected light? It seems really weird that a white metal surface with direct sunlight on it wouldn't illuminate surfaces nearby that are not in direct sunlight.
I have a 500 m/s version. I don't know if it works with any others though.
Emperor Augustus 2018
Does this mod work with a speed mod?
Wow. This is exactly what I wanted. Now we just need some sort of reflective light and it'd be perfect.
Appreciate the re-upload. I'll poke around in this as well!
