the years following the coup ended in economic recession from 1973 to 1975, eventually jumping back until the early 80's where the "chicago boys" were slowly ousted as their ideas were shown to be crap. the use of the drastic "shock therapy" caused tremendous damage, increasing unemployment, increasing the divide between rich and poor, and general harm to the economy.
but the economic policy isnt the worst part of his regiment, just a crappy part. the worst part were definitely the crimes against humanity. the sheer amount of mass dissapearences, especially when counting students, just shows how bad it was. admitedly by the ends of the regiment he did suceed in opening chile to the global markets, after giving his own economy a kick to the nuts and mass murder of all dissenters on a stalinist level.
In 1973 Pinochet overthrew the Chilean Communist Government and with the help of Alumni from the Chicago school of economics they deregulated the economy and privatized the industry returning economic freedoms to the people and though there were some rough patches caused mostly by South American economic problems (1975 and 81) they immediately bounced back and ascended higher than they previously were.
