The Lombards are an all-around strong civilization when religiously unified. Their sole bane is an absence of religions in their cities, as even if their capital's religion is not one which they founded, their empire can still gain Iron Crown bonuses from it.

UA - The Iron Crown:

Annexed, non-occupied cities in the empire with the same Religion as the Capital yield +15% more Great People and +15% more Production towards military units.

UU - Longbeard:

Lombard replacement for warrior. Has +3 sight and starts with Seige I, making it significantly stronger for resettlement and conquest than the Warrior.

UB - Baptistery:

Lombard replacement for the Temple. Yields +1 Culture and +1 Faith, but requires Theology. Has a chance every turn to convert 1 Citizen to the Capital's Majority Religion in the city in which it is built, making it powerful for keeping the empire under the bonuses of the Iron Crown. (The chance to convert scales with game speed)

Supported Mods:

The Lombards or Langobards were a Germanic tribe who ruled Italy from 568 to 774. The Lombard historian Paul the Deacon wrote in the Historia Langobardorum that the Lombards descended from a small tribe called the Winnili who dwelt in southern Scandinavia (Scadanan) before migrating to seek new lands. In the 1st century AD, they formed part of the Suebi, in northwestern Germany. The Lombard king Alboin decided to lead his people to Italy, which had become severely devastated after the long Gothic War (535–554) between the Byzantine Empire and the Ostrogothic Kingdom there.

By late 569 they had conquered all the principal cities north of the Po River except Pavia, which fell in 572. At the same time, they occupied areas in central and southern Italy. They established a Lombard Kingdom in Italy, later named Regnum Italicum ("Kingdom of Italy"), which reached its zenith under the 8th-century ruler Liutprand. In 774, the Kingdom was conquered by the Frankish King Charlemagne and integrated into his Empire. However, Lombard nobles continued to rule southern parts of the Italian peninsula, through the Duchy of Benevento, well into the 11th century when they were conquered by the Normans and added to their County of Sicily. Their legacy is also apparent in the regional name, Lombardy (in the north of Italy).

The crown worn by Lombard kings, known as the Iron Crown of Lombardy, was afterward given to all kings of Italy at coronation ceremonies in Pavia, from 9th through 18th century Holy Roman Emperors to Napoleon. Its name comes from the legend of the True Cross, wherin a nail used for the crucifixion of Jesus was made into the iron band central to the crown's structure.

@Xanadu-King

I chose them more for their role in Langobard history than the time period in which they existed. For instance, the Aztecs get the Jaguar as their replacement for a warrior. I gave them bronze swords for artistic purposes.

Swordsmen are also depicted in civ 5 as professional armored soldiers, not migratory warriors.

I am curious, since the Longbeards were an early middle age warrior, should they not replace the swordsman rather than the warrior? They just seem like it would work better as a swordsman rather than a simple warrior.
