描述
The Class 91 electric locomotive was introduced in the late 1980s as the main power unit for British Rail’s InterCity 225 high-speed trains on the East Coast Main Line. Built between 1988 and 1991 by British Rail Engineering Limited (BREL) at Crewe, the Class 91 was designed to operate at speeds up to 140 miles per hour, though regular service was limited to 125 mph due to signalling restrictions.

The Class 91 was part of British Rail’s plan to modernize and speed up services on the newly electrified East Coast route, linking London King’s Cross with cities such as Leeds, York, Newcastle, and Edinburgh. These locomotives worked with Mark 4 coaches and a Driving Van Trailer (DVT) at the other end, allowing the train to be driven from either end without turning the locomotive around.

The Class 91 featured an unusual bo-bo wheel arrangement and a powerful 6,300 horsepower output. One of its distinctive features was its aerodynamic design, especially at the "pointy" end, which was meant to reduce drag and improve speed. The rear was flatter, as it was usually coupled to the coaches.

Originally painted in the striking InterCity swallow livery, the Class 91s became a familiar sight on the East Coast Main Line for over 30 years. After British Rail was privatized, they were operated by several companies, including GNER, National Express East Coast, East Coast, and LNER. Many were refurbished under the "Project Mallard" program in the 2000s to modernize their interiors and improve reliability.

Although they have been gradually replaced by Hitachi-built Azuma trains (Class 800/801), a number of Class 91s are still in limited service and are being considered for further use or preservation. Their long career and role in transforming British intercity rail travel have made them one of the most successful electric locomotives in the UK.
