This is the third installment of the 'Oil Shortage - Back To Steam' series, and one of likely only two scenarios utilizing diesel power, but I may yet make a steam traction version as well.

INCLUDES AI TRAINS!! :)

While Challenger 3985 was busy hauling coal up Donner's east slope, the Roseville Yard was not idle at all. The freshly restored Cab Forward 4294 needs to be hauled out of the repair shops for its boiler certification tests, and a Maintenance of Way trip to check Track 1's soundness for steam traction running needs to be done, along with dead-towing a new-build Cab Forward to Colfax in the process. With two of the yard's GP50's, you get to do all three jobs at the same time.

NOTE: In this scenario, there is a 40 mph speed restriction from Roseville Yard to Loomis. However, because I do not know how to change speed-limits during scenarios and this was my first time making AI trains, there is no pace train, and the 40 mph speed limit is for right now voluntary unless I learn of a way to make a breakage happen if you exceed 40 mph. Let's just say its HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you stick to the 40 mph speed restriction if you want to keep from messing up the AI trains.

Also, everybody PLEASE let me know if your path at Bowman gets blocked due to a malfunctioning AI Train! I NEED TO KNOW OF ISSUES LIKE THAT!!

Very good. Though I have still learned something new from your feedback: it would probably help quite a bit in future scenarios of this series if I had the AI timing of meets pushed back a bit so that in case of one or two player mistakes or running too slowly they aren't doomed to failing the scenario or doomed to colliding with the AI train.

Loomis to Newcastle Track 1 is the toughest and most critical part of the climb in this scenario to making it to Bowman 1 Loop on time, as starting a mile or so before Penryn, the steepness SPIKES to 2.7%+, 2.9%+ in a spot, and 100% throttle/notch 8 is REQUIRED nonstop to keep your speed at or above 27-28 mph!

Once you reach Newcastle, you'll be able to see how well you did, but if you was able to keep moving at around 28 mph, your ETA to stopping on Bowman 1 Loop should only be about 20 seconds behind schedule, and its of course no problem keeping up 30.5 mph after Newcastle.

Following the above driving profile, you should be rolling through the switch into Bowman Track 1 Loop by 0559. How closely does your driving profile reflect what these instructions?

w0bjh, did you manage to leave Roseville by 051830-051930? If you leave much later than 05:19:30, you'll be badly outta sync with the AI trains.

Once out of Roseville within a minute of 0519, you should follow this driving profile:

20 mph until speed limit hits 35, then
30-30.5 mph until completely through the shunt onto Track 1, then
40-40.5 mph until you approach the 30 mph section of Rocklin Track 1
30-30.5 mph through Rocklin Track 1 then,
40-40.5 mph until you reach Loomis. Drop to 30.5 mph at or just before reaching Loomis, then keep this speed up.

BE READY to hammer the throttle to 100%/notch 8 a mile or so from Penryn after Loomis! At the point you hit the 2.7%+ extreme grades, you should be needing about 38%-50% throttle to maintain 30.5 mph, and once your speed starts to tick down rather quickly at these throttle settings, JAM the throttle to 100% and DO NOT EASE UP until you reach Newcastle Track 1!

Thanks for the comments w0bjh. I thought I had this problem figured out. It won't be until later on this week that I try and fix it though, as this is the busy period of my week.

Let me tell you that you can not maintain the speed limits to arrive at Bowman at 0600. Tried first time: late. The second time: on time (40 mph in the 30 mph zone). But still the AI collision.

Arrived at Bowman before 0600. Was lined-up for track 1 instead of track 1 loop. The switch is locked by amtrak 228 so not able go into track 1 loop. Conclusion: AI collision.

Southern Pacific Cab Forward 4294 was preserved.
