More Historical Pagans

描述
This is my first mod, so please expect some errors or strange things.

More Historical Pagans is a mod that aims to add in historical branches of germanic, celtic, and egyptian paganism to enhance and differentiate pagan gameplay. Currently, 6 (-ish) new faiths have been added, as well as one new religion- the celtic religion. The new faiths are:

Germanic Religion Faiths:

Asatru -

Tenets: Unchanged

Changed Doctrines: deviancy is now accepted, homosexuality is now shunned, adultery is no longer criminal, and witchcraft is virtuous

Holy Sites: Jorvik, Uppsala, Konugardr, Ranaheim, Reykjavik

Asatru has been modified both graphically and mechanically. Notably, it has been changed to be generally more accepting of other religions, as well as witchcraft, which was considered to be holy when performed by women. I also eased up on the homosexuallity doctrine as evidence shows that homosexuallity was treated more like it was in greece at the time. I also changed its icon to that of mjolnir to better differentiate from other germanic pagan religions. Paderborn was replaced by reykjavik as a holy site, as paderborn is a better holy site for mainland pagans, and a holy site in iceland better promotes asatru to try to capture and convert it. When reformed, the old religion becomes known as Forn Siðr, or "the old ways."

Heathenry -

Tenets: sanctity of nature, communal identity, megalithic constructions

Doctrines: gender equal, homosexuality accepted, all others same as asatru

Holy Sites: london, jorvik, lynn (seahenge), salisbury (stonehenge), and kent (temple of canterbury)

This new faith is based around english paganism, with its holy sites being placed around large religious centres in britain. While no rulers have this faith at game start, and it is rapidly at risk of being eliminated alltogether, a ruler of this religion can reap the benifits of holy sites in salisbury, london, and kent, where the cathedral can easily be adopted into a pagan temple. Heathen characters can also reap the benifit of megaliths, as they build grand henges like those of their ancestors. When reformed, the old religion becomes known as theodism. Its symbol is yggdrasil.

Irminism -

Tenets: gruesome festivals, communal identity, bhakti (patron gods)

Doctrines: same as asatru

Holy Sites: paderborn, uppsala, frankfurt, sjaelland, ostfriesland

The religion of the mainland germans. This religions has had its holy sites and doctrines based off of descriptions of early historians, focusing on various groves that where attested as holy sites. Now (properly) participating in human sacrifice, and with the historical location of Donar's Oak tweaked for balance, this faith should now be feature complete! (Mod ver. 1.3.0) Its symbol is the irminsul tree.

Celtic Religion Faiths -

Celtic:

Tenets: sanctity of nature, human sacrifice, and esotericism

Doctrines: virtues are brave, just, zealous, and miracle worker (mystic_3). sins are craven, arbitrary, and cynical. Spiritual head, male dominated, righteous, theocratic preists. polygamy, unrestricted consanguinity (theorised old celtic practice), homosexuality accepted (a few notable homosexual figures, probably legendary), adultery shunned, kinslaying close kin crime (historical precident), deviancy accepted (idk), witchcraft virtuous (this should be obvious). Preists are appointed spiritually, and are forbidden to be married. I couldn't find anything that said that druids couldn't be female, so either gender can be a preist. Bewailment funeral (keening)

This religion and faith is based primarily on irish celtic paganism. Unfortunately, the druids believed that no outsiders could know their practices, so a good amount of tenets and doctrines are guesses or based on non-druidic celtic practices, such as those of old irish kings. Similarily to heathenry, it was hard to figure out major celtic holy sites, so the ones included where chosen from large religious centers in celtic and brithonic parts of the british isles. Notably, there are two celtic holy sites in one county (dublin), so they may be somewhat overpowered. The religious head is called the high druid. It shares a symbol with the default pagan religion.

Kushite Religion Faiths:

Kushitism:
Unchanged

Kemetism:

Tenets: ancestor worship, communal identity, astrology

Doctrines: mummification, temporal head, lay clergy, unrestricted consanguinity

Holy Sites: aswan, giza, alexandria, luxor, abu simbel

Kemetism is based on the polytheistic ancient egyptian religion. The head of the faith is considered the pharaoh, and the names of gods reflect the ancient egyptian names, with Amun at the top. Also comes with a large list of ancient egyptian names which you can give your characters. Its symbol is an ankh.

Atenism:

Tenets: sun worship, aniconism, auspicious birthright

Doctrines, Holy Sites: Same as kemetism

This faith is based on the religion introduced by the pharaoh Akhenaten. It is very similar to kemetism, with the exception being that it was monotheistic and aniconic, with its sole god being Aten, god of the sun, who was represented by a metal disk. Atenism held up some people other than the pharaoh as being holy, granted divinity by Aten at birth. Despite its short time in power, atenism left a mark as the first monotheistic religion, and may have inspired others down the line. Its symbol is a sun.

Alongside these additions, the province history of the british isles has been changed to reflect the practice of folk-religions in the area. These changes are of uncertain historicity, and where largely made to keep paganism relevant despite the lack of pagan leaders.

Future Goals:
Add unique descriptions for all religions and faiths
Add localised holy site names
Add reformed religion symbols that are different from the base symbols
Add special buildings for paderborn, reykjavik, and lynn (will likely be a submod, in order to keep the base mod light)
Improve Irminsulism (with feedback from this page)
Add flavor for doing certain decisions (such as becoming high king of ireland as a celtic ruler)

Finally, I would like to thank everyone who downloads or gives feedback. This is my first mod, so I await constructive feedback so that I can make better mods in the future.

I recommend reading Tacitus's 'Germania'. He provides an excellent description of the dynamics of the continental Germanic peoples, for example noting that family and marriage are sacred and that the rate of adultery is similar to the crime rate in Japan. If adultery did occur, it was severely punished, sometimes resulting in banishment from the tribe.

For Heathenry I would recommend leaning into the Anglo Saxon pagan belief: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anglo-Saxon_paganism#Mythology

The names of the gods are anglesised versions of the Norse gods and so the overlap between the faiths are there. I would agree that the building of henges didn't hold the same place in their faith and so there is probably an argument for replacing it with Ritual Celebrations as the AS Pagans were reported by Bede to celebrate the turning of the seasons.

why call Wica Heathenry? if you're going for the English Germanic paganism then they didn't build henges to worship in, they just had sacred groves, it wasnt gender equal, theodism itself exists and is reconstuctionist faith that inputs modern values into an old religion. Which is fine in itself but entriely non-historical. Additionally, your holy sites are all Brythonic outside of Kent. Sure Hengest and Horsa were like folk heros but not to the Britons and Roman Britons in Britain.

How about, please shut up @The Victorianist? It's just a mod for a video game. It's not that deep. XD

@alfie

1. Life is political.

2. @The Victorianist didn't drag politics into it first. @Ġedryht of Wōden did, but I am sure that you only got mad at The Victorianist because he insulted your team on the political aisle.

@The Victorianist

How do you manage to drag politics into this? If nothing you are the degenerate here.

Seek help.

I am curious as to whether or not you changed the virtues of the various 'Paganisms,' especially seeing as the current ones are questionable at best, at least for the Germanic ones. Might I also ask where you determined that 'Heathenry' would have gender-equal and homosexuality accepted? I see no reason to suspect why the Anglo-Saxons/English would be more liberal in that regard when compared to their mainland kinsmen, I am just curious, as we know very little about Anglo-Saxon/English paganism, assuming that is, your takes on 'Heathenry' aren't creative liberties.

@Woden Warrior

Most Pagan faiths in Europe never had a name like "Christianity","Islam","Judaism","Shinto","Buddhism" and so on.

A lot of the names we have for them appeared in the 20th century.
Polytheistic reconstructionism/contemporary paganism use these made up names for ancient religions. We have no sources stating a name for these religions.

The only word which was used was Paganism before the 20th century, it was used since the 4th century in the Roman Empire by the early Christians. So that word is much more historically correct than any other name which appeared hundreds of years later.

To note: I see more Rightist degenerates who use shows like the Vikings TV shows as a source.

While there is definitely a new "pop history" surrounding viking attitudes, the idea that they're in-line with contemporary 1800s anglo values is equally ahistorical. Reactionaries are themselves also modernist, so
