RSS Southbank

The Schooner ‘Southbank’ was constructed at the yards in Liverpool in 1917. She served between several ports in the arctic as a cargo vessel until 1939, when the war in Europe forced her to return home and she was outfitted as a minesweeper. She was bombed and partially burned out in 1943. She was laid up and hulked as sand storage until 1946 when she was purchased. Her superstructure was completely rebuilt with a modern wheelhouse and aft superstructure, as well as crew accommodation. She operated as an Arctic trawler from 1947-1969 when she was once more laid up. In 1971 she was purchased and converted into a mobile weather station to operate in the Northern Hemisphere. She served this role almost completely incident free until her layup in 1985. She was abandoned at Port Arcctus. A heritage firm purchased her and she was restored between 1990-1994. In 1999 she was sold to the National Museums of Sawyer and towed to Holt Town. She was available as a venue for performances and historical tours. The money earned went to restoring the small ‘Waddenzee’. In 2017 a large storm struck Holt Town, during which ‘Southbank’ capsized. Her masts were dug deep into the silt and her keel was punctured by the pier but remained floating. A month-long investigation was undertaken, proving that the museum was £16m in debt, from which the court decided that she was capsized for insurance. Her hulk as well as ‘Waddenzee’ were seized by the government. The hulk was sold for rebuilding to a private firm. In 2021 she set sail as a small ferry that operates in several locations throughout the Southern Islands. She celebrated her 107th birthday last month. She is known through the duration of her career to have suffered from poor stability.
