Tower Outposts ambush invaders

描述
This mod gives tower outposts a 40% chance to spawn a small force to ambush enemy armies in their region. These can be reinforced by armies in refugee camp outposts.

Why I made this mod
I was never really that happy with towers, which had a pretty small benefit in defending a territory. I grew frustrated that small armies would wreck my shrines, or invading armies would waltz through a heavily defended region whilst fort garrisons sat comfortably behind their walls.

So I gave towers an additional benefit as described above.

How it works:
At the end of a characters turn, if they are in hostile territory with a tower outpost, they are logged as a candidate for ambush.
At the start of a regions turn, if there is a candidate for ambush in them, there is a 40% chance to spawn a small army that will ambush the invader.
This battle can be reinforced like any other, so nearby armies of refugee camps can assist the small force.
At the end of combat (or if the ambusher declines to attack) the ambushing army is destroyed.

Narrative explanation:
In my mind, towers act as little outposts where small groups of civilian warriors meet up and go scouting, perhaps finding and tracking enemy armies on patrol. They may choose to harass larger armies, destroy small invaders, or even begin skirmishing a large army to buy time for reinforcements.
After the battle is over, if any units that survive, go back to the tower to be the "home guard"civilians that they are. Military campaigns is not for them.

Gameplay implications:
  • very weak trespassing armies can be ambushed and wiped out/ finished off by tower ambushes.
  • Combined with Refugee Camp outposts, provides an ambush opportunity to weaken or destroy larger armies that may be passing through border regions.
  • A chance sieging units could get attacked.
  • Using Nuin's mod (linked above) Combine with Fort garrisons to ambush and destroy/weaken larger armies passing through border regions/

To match my narrative, I have made the ambushing armies linked to the realm the outpost is in. Typically one general and...
  • Fenkhu & Yamhad: 4 Canaanite Rock Throwers
  • Highlands: 3 Kaskian javelins
  • Isuwa & Lowlands: 4 Isuwan slingers
  • Nubia & Kush: 3 Nubian hunters
  • Lower Egypt: 4 lower Egyptian militia slingers
  • Retjennu & Sinai: 1 habiru militia, 2 habiru archers
  • Upper Egypt: 4 upper Egyptian slingers
  • Western Desert: 4 Libu slingers

Todo:
  • Need to create a dummy effect for towers.
  • Taking suggestions for a snappier mod name.

Note: looking to port this to Dynasties, but need to review code, it was causing some crashes!

more testing i realized

case 2 the battle is being autoresolved and the tower force loses
case 3 the ambush fails and invader force retreats

sometimes it works but sometimes there are some unexpected results

tower force spawns, does not attack invader force, does not disappear
tower force spawns, does not attack invader force, disappears
tower force spawns nowhere near an invader force, does not disappear

Well I totally removed the fort mod, instead of just disable, and it seems OK after a dozen turns or so turns. Cool.

It may still be causing the crash, even if disabled. I'm about to go on holiday for a few weeks so won't be able to debug this. 😐

Hey, out of interest, do you also use the standalone fort mod? I think there are end turn crashes in that.
