In honor of the fallen brave men of the 22nd Australian Brigade

At 2230 hours, under the command of General Tomoyuki Yamashita, Lieutenant Generals Takuro Matsui and Renya Mutaguchi commences the invasion of Singapore and orders an assault on the northwestern part of Singapore.

Falling for Yamashita's feint, Lieutenant General Arthur Percival concentrates his forces on the Northeastern part of Singapore, leaving Brigadier Taylor and his 22nd Australian Brigade to defend the northwestern beaches.



As the Japanese had lesser men overall, the Generals knew they could not afford an expensive long fight Instead, they used speed and violence of action to their advantage to push towards the Australian's command and control.



Under the cover of darkness, wave after wave of the Imperial Japanese 5th & 18th Division poured onto the beaches and overwhelmed and outflanked the dug in Australians.

Having fought all the way down the coast of Malaya, the Japanese fighters were experienced jungle fighters. With ferocious tenacity, they outmaneuvered the Australian defenders and threatened exposed flanks, causing Australian withdrawals throughout the night with defensive lines constantly being redrawn.

I'm a Singaporean, we often hear about the Battle at Bukit Panjang Ridge and not enough is known about the opening shots of the invasion. I hope to spark interest in this piece of history so that we remind ourselves of the need for self defence through conscription, and a lesson to never repeat the horrors of war.

With the failed defence, the inhabitants of Singapore were subjected to the brutalities and war crimes of the Imperial Japanese Army: Sook Ching Massacre[www.nlb.gov.sg]
