Introduction

While not as bad a game as many would say, Total War Pharaoh's battles unfortunately suffer from the majority of the issues found in the games since and including Rome 2. An otherwise decent campaign has been massively diminished by the lacklustre, shallow battles with no magic or spectacle like in Warhammer to compensate.

I have decided to work on an overhaul mod in an attempt to fix as much as possible. This is a very early version and there may be some balance issues or general oddities. There are also some features and fixes I'd like to implement that I either, for now, haven't got round to or worked out how to do yet.

What does this mod do?

No more HP system

The most pressing issue of modern total war by far is the asinine HP system that CA are so obstinately continuing to keep in the games. The 'main attraction' of this mod, I suppose you could say, is a near complete removal of HP. All HP has been set to 10 and all base melee damage has been set to 10 as well with 0-10 armour piercing damage. Chariots also have 10 HP but each horse also has 2 HP therefore making them effectively have 14 HP which is covered by the anti-cavalry damage of spears. Missiles all have 14 damage with varying AP. This does make missiles insanely overpowered so I have lowered their accuracy across the board with lower tier units having worse accuracy than their higher tier counterparts. The accuracy bonus from experience has also been lowered for balancing purposes.

This isn't perfect but it's certainly better than vanilla. Feedback here would be especially appreciated.

Morale

Morale has been tweaked quite a bit and is the area of this mod that will need the most refining. Flanking and rear charges have a much more significant effect on morale as would be realistic. Killing the general has a much larger effect on morale as does routing friends. This means that chain routs are much more common.
Other changes

  • The effects of weather and terrain are massively increased to offer more tactical opportunities and punishment.
  • Attack halved and defence doubled to increase the length of battles.
  • Combat animations are now almost always matched. (credit to Hecleas from whom I have taken many of the changes. The link to their original mod is linked at the bottom of the description)
  • Removed most of the annoying kicking combat animations, (credit to Ismar who made the mod I took parts of to make this change. The link also at the bottom of the description)
  • Shogun 2 unit spacing with more variation to create an organic feeling unit of individuals.
  • Edited model width and length as well as making them a capsule shape to made charge impacts more like Medieval 2.
  • Missile trajectories set to 'low' This means we are now as close to direct fire as I believe possible
  • Fire now does a lot more damage making it the deadly weapon we were promised.
  • No more difficulty modifiers in battles. They don't make the battle more challenging but instead just more annoying.

Planned changes

This is a list of the things I wish to change but have either not got round to or not found a way to implement as of now.

  • Remove the annoying 'zzz' icon that appears over the unit cards of idle units. (So far replacing the file with a transparent square creates an even more annoying translucent white box)
  • Add in some more combat animations from Rome 2/Attila.
  • Add a height advantage for missile units that affects their range.
  • Melee height advantage that affects something other than damage

Hey man ive been thinking about working on a similar mod to try to fix troy and turn it into a real total war game. Only issue is my experience with total war modding on these newer games is surface level. Since these are essentially the same game could you show me how you did some of the feats you implemented in this mod?

got game on sale cuz I want to play when they finish the map and make this a full game and not a DLC...

first battle against whichever random dude I fought using your mod was my first experience in the game so when I saw 700 HP it meant nothing to me. Enemy general bodyguard melted almost immediately when charged by my naked spear trash

reloaded without the mod fought the same battle vanilla then saw unit with 7800 HP instead. fought battle and enemy general melted about 30 seconds later to my naked spear trash

game seems pretty easy for anyone who knows how to TW. I started on VH campaign H battle...

did you nerf HP because stronger units are like the Picked Hoplites from Rome 2 for example? Those dbags will sit there being attacked from all sides and not losing a single man while being cycle charged and hit with ranged for an eternity

perhaps. For most of April and all of May, I've had Pharaoh uninstalled. I'll definitely update this mod when the map expansion update comes out.

Love the concept of this mod, thanks for the work. Would just comment from my experience that it seems like units route a little too quickly/easily currently, which makes even slightly outclassed battles extremely trivial and very quick, lasting only a couple minutes or less after contact (where you have around projected 1/2 - 3/4+ yellow on the bar)

Thanks for the mod. The battles feel way better. Chariots just should have more ressistance against missiles. If you have 2 units of bow chariots togheter they kill each other with friendly fire
