Sadly...
I really recommend turning on infinite ammo for this, the machine guns don't have much ammo. Blame the devs for their terrible guesswork.

Long-Range Fighter
The P-51D was le creme de le creme in many aspects, far surpassing what earlier models could achieve. It's enormous range and powerful engine made it the perfect candidate to not only protect bombers, but to be one of the few aircraft that regularly engaged early jets.
