Description

Steamworld Defenses is a historically inspired mod that aims to add various weapons and defensive structures from the early industrial/Victorian era.

Contents

This mod contains a total number of seven hand held weapons, five turrets, and two kinds of defensive structures.
• breach loading rifle
• rifled musket
• rifled pistol
• falling block rifle
• howdah pistol and volley rifle
• pneumatic rifle, air gun and air pistol
• stake gun and stake revolver
• hand mitrailleuse
• cuirassier sword
• dragoon sabre
• bayonet
• tailed grenades
• mitrailleuse
• repeating gun
• salvo gun
• light and field cannon
• explosive crates in three sizes
• earthen sconces

Compatibility

With Athena Framework active, the stake gun and revolver deal five times the damage to carriers of the Deathless gene.

Combat Extended: This mod hasn’t been tested with CE but probably some patches are needed.
No other incompatibilities are tracked so far.

Known Issues

Balance might be an issue, especially for the turrets, so any feedback is welcome.

Future plans

I plan to expand this mod further with more firearms (the Martini Henry for example), defensive structures or traps, and medical stuff.

Textures and XML are created by me.
RimWorld is developed by Ludeon Studios.

@AcetheSuperVillain and Apoplectic Alopex Please take a look into the mod settings. I’ve updated the medievalizing patch so that the research project (“rifling and breech loading”) stands between gunpowder and gunsmithing. All you have to do is enabling the patch.

I was basically going to say the same thing as Ace below me. It would be cool to have these more naturally fall into a research between the VE Gunpowder weapons and the base-game Gunsmithing weapons.

I love the aesthetics of this mod (and its siblings) but the research requirements strike me as odd. "Gunsmithing" tends to mean "smokeless powder" weapons in RimWorld, whereas these are all black powder era weapons. Since it requires Vanilla Expanded Framework anyway, it would be better to use their gunpowder research. (to be fair, not sure if Gunpowder is from VEF or Vanilla Weapons Expanded) Or just make it all your own custom research project. Sorry if I'm missing something.

@Midget Jesus GamingWell Well, thanks for pointing that out. It turns out I confused a ”,” with a ”.” in the repeating guns code.
In other news: both of the field cannons can now be fired from under roofs. The heavy cannon now got its own shell, which replaces the HE mortar shell, but is just as strong.

@koni I checked again for the reloading issue and it seems the only one that has any problems (at least for me) is the Repeating gun. Salvo and Mili work perfectly. Just letting you know just in case : )

@Midget Jesus Gaming Thank you for your kind words.
About your issues: I just did a little testing and I can’t replicate any of them regarding the machine guns (reloading or roofed positioning just worked fine to me).
The thing with the artillery pieces seems caused by the shells they use. They fly over head which prevents firing from under a roof. I will optimize this in a short future.

Fantastic mod, I use all of your steamworld mods and I really love them but I just have two questions about the manned artillery emplacements:

1) I was making a gun emplacement/bunker under a mountain, but none of the artillery will fire under any roof, not even the machine guns. I assume this is probably because it uses some of the mortar’s code and this might be a vestige from it since that cannot fire under any roof either. Is there a solution/remedy to this or is it just something that can’t be solved?

2) Is there a problem with the colonists reloading the gattling gun? A couple of times I have run the barrel out of ammo and I’m sitting on quite a heap of steel, but the colonists will not reload the gun. I have mini turrets in other places as well that the colonists will load, but for some reason they will not replace the barrels of the gattling gun. It might be a bug but I’m unsure.

Anyway great mod I love it very much : )
