RMS Atlantic (1872)

Atlantic's story:
In 1868, the White Star Line was bought out by Thomas Ismay, and he soon partnered up with Harland and Wolff, where they would design a steamship for the re-established company. This steamer would be named 'Oceanic', after the White Star Line's parent company, Oceanic Steam Navigation Company. Oceanic was originally not very revolutionary, with a saloon in the stern and lacking a proper boat deck, though her design was overhauled again to bring a revolutionary vessel, with a midship saloon to reduce pitching, abnormally large portholes for improved lighting and ventilation, as well as many skylights along deckhouses, bringing natural light into the hallways and saloon. The Oceanic was laid down in 1869, as well as this ship, the Atlantic. Oceanic was launched, and broke down on her maiden voyage. Atlantic was expected to do the same.

On November 26, 1870, the Atlantic was launched at Harland and Wolff shipyards under a large crowd, and the Baltic and Republic would be launched soon after, with the more advanced Adriatic and Celtic the following year.

Atlantic was finished on June 3rd of 1871, and was finely fitted to the upmost high quality compared to her Cunard rivals. She was ready for her maiden voyage, and departed Liverpool on June 8th, 1871 being almost fully booked and with reporters waiting to write a humiliating story as they expect the Atlantic's engines to break down, as Oceanic had done that March.

Atlantic had triumphantly steamed into New York Harbour, impressing those on board due to her luxurious and rapid crossing, where she truly defined the 'White Star Service'.

The Atlantic would become an extremely popular vessel on the North Atlantic route, even surpassing the Oceanic in popularity. She continued to impress the public and the press for eighteen more voyages, albeit with minor incidents.

Around March or April 1872, the Atlantic was refitted heavily, installing a turtleback on the bow, and removing a set of bunks for the majority of the saloon class cabins, and installing a comfortable sofa which would reduce her capacity but increase her luxury. Additional cabins were installed forward of her saloon too, reducing her steerage capacity.

The first of two collisions is when departing dock on August 23rd 1872, the steamer Alexandria of the Anchor Line bumped into the Atlantic, causing minor damage. The Atlantic was shortly taken out of service for minor repairs to be performed, and re-entered service soon after. Again on October 15th, Atlantic crashed into a ship named Wisconsin in the Liverpool Crosby channel.

In March 1873, the Atlantic was planned to steam for South America, but this unpopular plan fell through due to being so severely underbooked. Instead, she departed Liverpool on her 19th voyage, where she would sail out of the Mersey with a large crowd, them being unaware that would be the last time the Atlantic would see Liverpool.


A coal strike was going on, so Atlantic received 927 tons compared to 1,155 tons. Additionally, she usually only burned the higher quality Welsh coal, but this voyage she also used the faster burning Lancaster coal.


On the 31st, a great wave struck the Atlantic and destroyed her forward starboard boat. By evening, it had been decided to divert to Halifax, Nova Scotia, as it was estimated she may not have enough coal to reach New York City.

Around 3:00AM on April 1st 1873, the Atlantic tore out her keel as she steamed over rocks.
Some were awakened, and assumed this was the anchor chains being released out of the bow, until her bow was smashed in and she was wedged onto Golden Rule Rock.

In full astern, her stern was swung around and all 4 blades were destroyed in an instant.
Without any drag slowing them down, her propeller shaft spun incredibly fast and her engine began surging, as the boiler room began to flood.

It is believed her boilers exploded soon after, blowing the ship into a haze of steam as she slid off the rocks at the stern and rapidly settled.
Survivors climbed her masts, and later onto Golden Rule Rock via a rope, and help came eventually.

Of the 952 on board, around 535 were lost.


The Atlantic was the worst White Star disaster until the Titanic, and is wrongly believed to be the deadliest sinking at this point.
It is likely the deadliest wreck by 1873 was the Tek Sing, which wrecked in 1822 with around 1,600 lost.
