Got it to function, but it's an unnecessary annoying workaround:

-Subscribe to mod

-Unpack assets

-Add "includes" : ["Mechineki"] to metadata file

-Unsubscribe from mod on Steam

-Place unpacked folder with modified metadata file in Starbound mods folder
