STORY:
In 1884, the RMS Umbria entered service for the Cunard Line. The outdated Glasgow was not enough to keep up with the new Guion Line ships, nor the Cunard's Servia, Aurania and Umbria. With fierce competition from these lines, and the Greyhound Steam Navigation Company's RMS Nova Scotia, they had no choice but to build a pair of new liners. On August 11th 1885, the RMS Faroe was launched from her slipway with over a thousand watching as the gigantic steamer slid into the water stern first. Aside from the Great Eastern, she was the largest ship on the Atlantic in 1886, and had a large fanfare on her maiden voyage, with most passengers boarding at Liverpool. Proudly sporting 3 funnels, she was the new flagship for the company and challenged the Guion and Cunard line. A single screw propelled her at a slightly disappointing but feasible speed of 15 and a half knots. After two brilliant voyages of service, the RMS Glasgow was sold off to the Greyhound Steam Navigation Company where she would be rebuilt to a higher standard.
Below, a small description of the Faroe:
"This splendid new steamship is truly the pride of Scotland. Beautiful exterior with a Scottish crossbill on her bow and smooth lines that give her a charm above the Cunard steamships. With three gigantic funnels, she is truly the ship of the decade, possibly even century. Her grand saloon has an expansive and large well, along with a music room, smoking room and something seen less often, second cabin is aboard this ship."
By 1890, the outclassed ship received a refit to update her, and rival the new RMS Teutonic and Majestic.
In 1892, the Faroe was in a storm off the coast of England when suddenly her single screw lost two of it's blades. Engines and boilers were shut down as a safety precaution, but the ship seemed safe. RMS Ontario spotted the distress signals and came to the Faroe's aid. Thankfully the Faroe was towed into Liverpool and her voyage cancelled, quite an embarrassment for the company. From 1899 to 1901, she transported troops in second Boer War, and in 1908 she was laid up with an uncertain future. Sadly, the old steamship was sold for scrap and broken up on the Mersey soon after.
Her sister ship, however, lasted longer. Sold to a Spanish line in 1896 and renamed from Sandur to SS Paz del Mundo (SS World Peace). In 1900, she was re-bought by the line to help with the Boer War, and was refitted and served on the Canadian route, rivalling the old Nova Scotia. While sailing to Queenstown for her final port of call, she was spotted by a u-boat and torpedoed. Thankfully, only seven died from the initial explosion, and she was safely evacuated. The Montrose line was rewarded the German SS Atlantisch as compensation four years after her loss. The Atlantisch entered service for the line in 1924.
