The issue has nothing to do with copyright law, trademark or the Geneva Conventions. Geneva Conventions only apply during wartime and not to video game development companies.

The Red Cross is simply incredibly dense and constantly pesters anyone that uses a simple red cross, particularly video game developers for some reason.

There is no law or trademark enforcement in place, that's why you never hear about them suing someone.

If anything, I'd feel that NWN could have followed of Doom did and made their crosses green.

It had nothing to do with "distancing themselves from video game medkits" and everything to do with enforcing their trademark: https://trademarks.justia.com/764/48/n-76448672.html and also pertains to Geneva conventions violations (you can not display a known health care symbol on a non-health care related building, employee, etc.). Not only is it a violation of trademark law to use the symbol without permission, it is a violation of international law. An image to represent a healing item (or character's health, as it is often otherwise used), does not constitute fair use as it is still associating that symbol with health related services. It also still falls under illegal use of health care symbols per the Geneva Convention, among other things.

The RC's campaign to claim ownership of a basic mathematical symbol & color never ceases to astound me.

I love this, largely because it means if I download it my copy of Neverwinter Nights will be violating the Geneva Convention.
